Learn from the past and look to the future. This was great place to stop walk, learn and interact with the past. They have accumulated and maintain a number of historical homes and business from throughout Long Island. This provides a peek into life during the early days of Island development when people had to be more generalist to thrive.

While the place is trying to educate the visitors, OBVR should really post a few signs prior to letting people into the village. Such as strollers not allowed in buildings, no smoking, and other common sense things. Overall a nice place to visit

A DAY OF PAST LIFE. This historical recreation of 1800's life on Long Island is a woderful way to spend a casual day outdoors. Many actitivies of the era are recreated and the buildings (not reception) are original restored.

The place was nice overall, but the girl at the front was in a hurry and didn't not go out of her way for us at all when we asked for directions on the map or where the restrooms were. When we thought we finally found them, we arrived at what looked like an old barn with the doors locked. Someone told us they were modern but these weren't. So we did not know these were the restrooms! We went looking and looking; it seemed like everyone was telling us different things. Boundaries and roads are not clearly defined. We wasted it seemed like a half hour looking and I'm ashamed to say I had to go on the floor in an old broken down shack with bugs crawling in it. When you have to go you have to go! My bladder was starting to hurt. Finally we saw two guests who were looking for the restrooms also. It turned out they were at the place we thought, but the doors were indeed locked! The guests had to go out of the way to tell one of the workers they were locked when they finally opened them. At least my friend went decently. What a disgrace! There should have been signs and the restrooms should have been opened. Workers overall were not too accommodating and uppity. Some were very nice. The grounds by the barn were not well kept and full of manure. Although it was beautiful along with the scenery, and you did feel like you were in a time warp, I'm not sure ill be making the effort to go back.

I never knew this place existed until I was in the area and looked for things to do nearby on Google maps. I quickly researched the place and saw some great reviews. I have been to a few of these villages in the past (Allaire in NJ and Sturbrudge in MA) and loved them both. I decided to give it a try since I had some time to kill as traffic going back west was terrible. I arrived at around 1 PM on an 85-degree and sunny Friday and the place was pretty empty. The parking lot is huge, but I’m sure it fills up as we approach the summer weekends. There is a visitor center/entrance with a few indoor exhibits and some interesting facts about the village itself and how it was constructed. The ticket counter is also there. An adult ticket is reasonably priced at $15 in person, but you can buy it online in advance for little cheaper ($12.50) from their website. Children tickets are about $12 in person and $9.50 online in advance. The counter staff were friendly and efficient. In that area, there were lots of picnic table seating, both indoor and outdoor. I’m not sure if that area is opened since COVID, but no one was there at the time. After entering the village area, there is a large field where I found out has baseball games from time to time. The central village area has lots of “houses” each staffed with workers who give you a little tour and tell you a bit about the history of the house and its inhabitants. There are other houses for special skills or crafts; blacksmith, hat maker, general stores and others. Staff is these houses will explain a bit about their craft and give demonstrations. There is a farm area there where I saw workers working, but I don’t think there is much you can do there. There is also an area with a barn and animals. That entire section has pigs, sheep, cows, chickens, turkeys, geese, ducks and goats. At the time, I would say about 70% of the houses in the entire village were opened. I understand more are opened during the weekend and special events. All staff were knowledgeable, patient and friendly. I can tell that they have a passion for history and teaching. There is so much to see and learn throughout the village. I would highly recommend this place to people of all ages. Especially those kids and adults interested in history. It’s a great way to get the kids out the house for an educational experience and away from screens for a little while. I would love to return during of the special events or reenactments. There is a gift shop in the visitor/entrance center but it was closed when I was leaving at around 3:30 PM. I don’t remember seeing any food options…though I did see a sign for vending machines but I’m not sure what were in those. Wear comfortable shoes…the terrain is grass, dirt and gravel, which is also good to know for those with strollers or wheelchairs.

I had my wedding at the Barn that is on the old Bethpage village restoration grounds. It was beautiful for the wedding and the reception. The photographer walked us to some of the old buildings and took pics, it was very nice.
It’s a nice place to take the kids and show them old America.

If you're into American history. This place is a must. It's a modest-size living history exhibit, something that can be done in 2-3 hours, but the level of knowledge among the staff places it on a par with the best I've seen in the US (Harper's Ferry, Sturbridge, Plymouth, Williamsburg). Tell Ken the hatter that I'll be back for one of his hats (they're for sale).

Our group of 5 adults and 3 young children (3-7) spent a very enjoyable evening at the second (of five) candlelight evening. Although it was very crowded and difficult to find parking spots for our two vehicles, we managed to visit several of the very old houses in the village. The docents and the costumed individuals doing the demonstrations were very impressive and our grandchildren especially enjoyed the singalong in the church and popcorn in the Hewlett house. Compared to similar events that we have attended at other locations, cost was very reasonable.

Very well preserved and presented village showing how life was back in the past on Long Island. They have taken a selection of period homes, businesses and other buildings and created a village complete with working blacksmith, farm, schoolhouse and many other things, and stocked it with wonderful and educational characters in period dress to tell the stories of those days.

Yes, there are picnic tables at OBVR. We left our food (in a cooler) in our car, and then ate lunch a few hours after arriving.

What airport would be best to fly into? We have friends getting married there and it's a 15 hour drive from our home (with a 1 year old) so we're looking into other options.

Sorry this is so late. McArthur airport in Islip is the closest but not many non stop flights. Look at Kennedy, more convenient than LaGuardia..
