We should come to the New Island Trail more often - not the easiest to access, but well worth the effort! You can enter from Southside or from Catella Park. Fabulous views of the Susquehanna River and at times, you lose yourself and forget you're so close to town or near the Interstate!

Excellent trail for level hiking and mountain biking. Great views of the Susquehanna. Saw bald eagle, turtle and lots of waterfowl.
Nice variety of goldenrod filled fields and varied woods. Saw nice crop of ‘chicken in the woods’ bright orange tree shelf-like fungus.

Clearly marked trail quietly hidden away. This is a little known spot but asking the local people assisted us in finding it.

I tried out the New Island Trail with a friend...had walked by the signs many times. What a wonderful trail tucked away amongst the interstate and the Susquehanna River.

We parked in the spaces at the entrance to the new island trail which was clearly marked but lost sight of the trail when we had to cross Lettis highway but found the trail on the other side. At least there was safe crosswalks there. There was a lot of road noise from The nearby route 88. The trail was well maintained and pretty otherwise. Thanks

I had been walking all around Neahwa park while a grandson was using the skatepark and I crossed under the large 4-lane bridge (not I-88) and found myself in a far corner of an athletic field waling on this trail. I did not complete the trail. I only began it. There is actually a sign board telling about the trail out front along the athletic field where you can find it easier. I was quite impressed with how handy this trail is to anyone living right in Oneonta. You can simply walk or bike to this trail and follow it along the Susquehannah River and feel like you are really getting away from everything, yet you are still quite close to civilization. I would imagine that folks of all age could enjoy this trail because it is gentle and not at all mountainous. And if you go with little kids and they get worn out you could simply turn around without any trouble. Enjoy it.

This is a multi-use trail in the heart of Oneonta, NY. It begins near the underpass, inside the boundaries of Neahwa Park. There is a small parking area (for about 3 or 4 cars) at the trail head.
The trail follows the fence line right next to the highway until you reach an unlocked gate. Go out of the gate, turn left, cross the intersection under 1-88. You pick up the main part of the trail after you've cross the entrance ramp to I-88 East. The trail will be to your left and is well marked.
The trail follows the river and is a very nice walk. You'll pass the Southside Dam to your right. If you're a fan of the General Clinton Canoe Regatta, this is one of the portage sites for the race. Beyond this point, Parts of the trail are an old railroad bed, so it is mostly flat. If you have the time, take a picnic with you. There's a nice place with a bench on old rail bridge to sit down and enjoy the sites. The trail is dog friendly, and can easily be managed by young children.
Take the side trails at your own risk. They are mostly for the trail bikes and can be slippery and chewed up. They're not terrible, just be aware of what you're getting into and make sure that your footwear is water resistant and has good tread.
The only negative about this trail is its proximity to two major roadways. Traffic noise can be intrusive during busy times of the day. But, if you need a quick amble into the woods, this is a great place to go!
