Interesting place to visit for the historical overview of Gerrit Smith as abolitionist and progressive powerhouse in the 19th century. There are several buildings on the site, with informative placards. Be sure to visit the cemetery with slave headstones. Definitely worth the beautiful country ride to visit.

A one-hour stop here is very worthwhile, especially if you are not familiar with Gerrit Smith. The man was an amazing abolitionist and super-philanthropist, and if you don't know who he was it's partly because he kept a low profile and sought no personal recognition.

This is referred to as an estate, but don't expect large impressive buildings and sprawling grounds. The mansion burned down a very long time ago and what's left here to see is limited.

First, make a brief stop in the Lodge, a small house where you pay your small admission fee. There's a gift shop here, too.

Then, go to the barn and make sure you view the video about Gerrit Smith. It's about 20 minutes and it is important if you are to understand the site. The old TV it is shown on is testament to the fact that the site is run by volunteers with very little budget to work with. (It's a shame, as they deserve better.)

The barn, and in various locations around the property, are panels of information. There's a small brick building; go inside for the simple exhibits there.

The second weekend in June is usually Civil War weekend here, and about half a dozen tents and displays are set up, with volunteers dressed in period. I came to see the Smith estate, but this was a nice bonus. If your schedule is flexible, this is a good time to visit. I learned a lot from the laundresses and the doctor.

While you are in town, be sure to stop by the National Abolition Hall of Fame and Museum, across the street in the next block. It and the Smith estate complement each other well and are worth visiting.

stopped here in 2015, The placards were quite interesting. Smith was a really committed person to the abolition movement.

Buildings that were part of the Smith Estate telling the story of an abolitionist who was ahead of his time in providing sanctuary, financial support, and social interaction for slaves fleeing the South. It was an important "underground railroad" site and provided land to free slaves. Also connections with many other abolitionists in the Central NY, a hotbed of supporters of slave freedom.
