This is not a glitzy, polished Winery - it is more bare bones. The owner, Richard Eldrige, opened the Winery in 1979, with his late wife. The experience was relaxed and we were given leeway to choose any four wines for a tasting fee of $5 (total) per person. For an extra $2, we (my husband and sons and I) chose to try the Carbenet Franc 2019 which was very good - to me it tasted like a light-ish Cotes du Rhone. Richard taught us about the wines, what kind of grapes they came from, fermentation and how stopping the process at different times determines the wine character, different ways of making the sweeter wines, etc... You can tell that Richard used to be a teacher (Political Science) at a local college! We bought three bottles of wine - the Cabernet Franc 2019, Cayuga White 2020, and Vin Rouge Superieur 2016 plus another bottle of the Cayuga White for our daughter. The Tasting Room is on the second floor over a garage; the Winery is on a quiet road in Pine Bush; when you pull up, if not for the sign, you might think you were pulling up to someone's home. Get out of your car, close your eyes and breathe in relaxation and breathe out stress. We will be back - to try Richard's other wines!

Can’t really rate this place We drove by and wanted to go in but felt very Erie about the place since we did’t see any cars or life on the grounds. Made us feel uneasy so we went to an near bye distillery.

Don’t be misled by the shabby appearance of the winery’s main building! Go inside to enjoy a great selection of local wines, some of the best in the region, at a fraction of customary tasting cost. Also make sure to ask questions to the proprietor. Unlike the relatively ill-informed employees that conduct wine tastings at other local wineries, the old wise man at the counter here will tell you anything you might wish to know about the grapes and their origins or discuss the differences between the oak barrels use in the US vs. France.

While at Brimstone, also get a bottle of the locally made bubbly. It’s pretty good!

We visited Brimstone as part of the 2019 Wine & Bites event. We visited 12 of the 15 wineries on the tour. Of the 12, there were only 6 that I would return to. This is one of them.

People take wine tours or go to wineries for different reasons (bachelorette parties etc). If you want the big fancy building, big brand new tasting room with mediocre wine and impersonal service, go to them. Be just another person standing in the room being told what to taste.

Or, find a smaller, less flashy winery, engage with the owners, sample the wines, ask questions, ask about the next year's vintage. The small wineries have to work twice as hard as the larger ones to bring in their grapes, market their products and put much more heart and soul into each bottle.

This was the only winery that actually paired the "bites" part of the tour to match exactly with the tasting. And we methodically went through each step to enjoy each pouring.

When the owner saw that we were asking questions, engaging the person pouring in conversation about the wines, he joined the conversation. Being very proud of his wine, offered to take us into the fermentation room and allowed us to sample next year's vintage. Showed us the vintage label maker (from France) that he continues to use. He talked to us about how French wines are made and how he tries to stay as true as possible to the process.

Is the place spotless and brand new? Not even close. Is the owner's heart and soul in this business? You bet it is. Is he proud of his wine? Absolutely. Was the wine good? We bought 4 bottles, so yes, it is.

Don't judge the place by the way it looks, judge it by the quality of wine they make. It's not a wedding venue, it's a winery.

Excellent Vidal Blanc and Riesling! Owner or this small vineyard treated us to unfiltered fresh squeezed (30 seconds old) purple grape juice. Spectacular! Shame to turn this into wine. Richard (Owner) very hospitable and informative. Stock up on cases whenever possible. Fun experience. Apparently size doesn't matter!

OK, the Shawangunk Wine Trail brochure said they open at 11:30 AM. So on this super blustery day, my husband and I waited a few more minutes, looked for signs of life, and braved the wind and ventured to what looked like a garage... no sign where to enter this first winery on our trail stop. The cardboard "enter here" sign had blown off on the steps.

We climbed the stairs and entered an old, 70's paneling room - dusty, cluttered, invoices and receipts all around, and walked up to a bar of sorts and called out, "Hel-lo? Hel-lo? Anybody home?" We looked around, in an office at the left. No one. There were some wine bottles on display - we presumed that's where the tastings happened.

So we waited. 5 minutes. 10. And then my husband decided to call their phone number to see if we could alert someone. The phone on the counter next to us rang. No one came.

It was creepy. We felt like we were on a hidden camera TV show. Still no one came.

So we left. Not a nice way to begin a new wine trail.

This was our first stop as part of the Shawangunk wreath winery tour. Very didsapointing from the outside and just as didsapointing inside. The older gentlemen who assisted us was not friendly. We left as soon as possible.

We visited here after another winery in the area. Tastings here were $3 each, for 7 wines. They were all pretty standard, and there wasn't anything that stood about this one.
