Beautiful spot for a short walk in the woods. You can see Long Island Sound on the way and the Sanctuary itself has some nice, short, easy, well-marked trails. Pretty quiet though when we were there on a weekend there were enough people it didn't feel isolated.
Osprey nest but no osprey visible but some wild turkeys and other birds (see picture) as well as deer.
$10 for parking at Rye Playland. Park in the back, right side of the lot and there is a sign for Edith Read Sanctuary.

This is a great spot for birdwatching with great views into the sound as well as a more protected lake. A few trails meander the property. There is a nature center with bird feeders. A small annual donation gives access to parking.

Although the sign at the entrance to Playland lists the Read Sanctuary, you're on your own once you enter the park. And when the amusement park is open, you'll have to pay for parking. Even if you park at the far end of the lot, it's still at least a mile to the Wildlife Sanctuary. There are no signs or maps to guide you and the first time we came here, we gave up and went home as no one who worked there seemed to know where it was. On our second attempt, we found it. Although there is parking right near the visitor's center at the Sanctuary, I can't figure out how anyone drives in since both entrances to the road leading to it have locked gates. Once you're there, it's a pleasant enough, well cared for spot. But beware if you're bringing small children or anyone not up to a long trek, especially on a hot day. The road leading in offers no shade and nowhere to sit down. Try the Marshlands Conservancy. It's more accessible, offers more varied terrain & parking is free.

Walked through here and it is a big contrast to Playland on the other side of the lake, A lovely quiet oasis away from what must be bedlam in the summer months. There are good places to park but no dogs allowed. Osprey nest site and lots of bird feeders near the wardens hut. In April there was little signs of wildlife apart from a lot of waterfowl. Saw some robins and red cardinals as well.Good paths along the lakeside

A pleasant walk in any weather. Just past the Playland parking lot, fairly small preserve supports an impressive variety of wildlife. Trails through woodland, lakeside and LI Sound shore.

We parked on the gravel area along the beach and walked along the path to the Nature Center.
We were greeted a lovely attendant and told about the various features in the building.
The indoor bee hive was the most amazing to listen to the gentleman explained the different jobs all the bees have and how they tend to the Queen bee.
The life span of a bee is also quite interesting and the way royal jelly takes a part in determining the sex of the bee.
Go for your self and learn all you can about nature and the importance of protecting it.
Kayaking is allowed on the beach side of the sanctuary but not in the prohibited areas.
It pays to get a " Friends of Reads Wildlife Sanctuary" membership. The pass included gets you into the parking lot by the sanctuary and includes some events. It is also a nice picnic area.
Also check out the bee and butterfly garden.

This place is a little tricky to get through in summer through Playland, but is essentially free if you are willing to walk. Very secluded and feels like being miles from anywhere. Great for children to explore, most of it stroller accessible in dry weather, lots of animals/birds to see in wild, great place to run/jog but is quite isolated.

is the walking path manageable for someone needing to use a walker?

No. There is an area be the parking where you could maneuver a walker, depending on rain and ability, you may be able to walk to the lake, and the nature center and porch overlooking the feeders are accessible.
