We visited early on a Sunday morning in October. I know the parking in the area is not great, so we decided to drive down from Rhinebeck first thing in the morning, which worked very well.
We entered the cemetery north of the Old Dutch Church and drove around were we could. They had a lot of the roads blocked off because of tours. We then drove towards the church and parked on a side street. We walked in at the church and went up to the Washington Irving grave and around that area. The fall colors were about peaked, so the photos were excellent.
They embraces the Legend of Sleepy Hollow in the cemetery with markers about the Headless Horseman and signs that depict the character here and there. It was all quite cool.

I joined the murder and mayhem tour and we loved it. The tour guide was excellent. It is pricey, but the cost goes to the upkeep of the very old cemetary and it was a very good, full 2 hour experience. They use lanterns to keep the spooky ambiance as well. I would definitely like to visit the cemetary during the day sometime, but this tour was excellent.
The only thing to make note of, for those not familiar, Google maps will show the south gate as the main entrance, but the tour starts at the north gate. And at night you won't be able to walk through the cemetary. So you should take your car to the north gate specifically.

Beautiful! My art student daughter loved what she found here. We enjoyed paying respects to historical persons, and immersing ourselves in literary inspirations. Staff and non-staff tour guides were very friendly. Would love to go back in a not so busy time.

We visited the cemetery on our own in the daytime and we were glad we did. We decided to take the walking lantern tour for the spookiness and to get more of the history. The guide was very nice, said her day job was a librarian and she spoke like one - very quiet. We couldn't hear much of what was being said, especially coupled with traffic noise, planes and even a helicopter flying over. As well, as the night wore on, I could barely keep up, even on up hill climbs, our guide was practically running through the cemetery. On the last hill to the Rockefeller's grave site, we almost lost sight of the group, as I couldn't keep up. Be aware, if you're a little older, have back problems or trouble walking for 2 hours, you definitely will have problems on this tour. Especially since the "walking" is really fast paced.

My wife and I went on the Classic Evening Lantern Tour on a Thursday evening in early October. The tour was well organized, despite that fact that there were about forty or more people there for the tour. We were split up into two groups. Our tour guide, and all of the staff for that matter, were very friendly and informative. The lanterns were more for ambiance since they didn't really light up the paths very well. Stopped at the grave sites of all the well known persons buried in the cemetery. The tour guide provided an in depth history of each person. We learned a lot about both these people and the history of the area. If you're looking for a ghost tour this is not the tour for you, it is just a history tour. But it is a great setting for a history tour, and walking by lantern light just adds more to the experience. Would recommend this tour to anyone traveling to Sleepy Hollow.

What an incredible historic cemetery. It’s so beautiful with trees, huge mausoleums and also simple headstones. At one of the gates there are self guided maps. I’m sorry I don’t know which one. We drove around for an hour just admiring the beauty. There are many famous people interned here including Washington Irving, author of The Legend of Sleepy Hollow.

Beautiful, historic and interesting. Amanda's "pointy pointy" gothic architecture description will live in my brain rent free from here on out . We unfortunately didn't get to go during October but you can tell Amanda loved the subject and the history. That made it all the more enjoyable. Beautiful weather and a lovely walk. Some areas are a bit tough for sure footing, wear good , sturdy , safe shoes. Highly recommend

Sleepy Hallow Cemetery is a beautiful place. Many well known people rest there. 90% of my family and I will be as well. However, The Headless Horseman and Washington Irving are NOT buried there. They are in the burial ground of the Old Dutch Church. At the time most of what is cemetery today did not exist!

The view was amazing. It has beautiful streams. Many famous people are buried here....Walter Chrysler, Washington Irving, Elizabeth Arden, and William Rockefeller to name a view.

This is a fascinating cemetery to explore.
A map is a definite plus; in that the size of the venue, and windingness of the roads, can easily bring one to some confusion as to their location.
The tombstones, masuliums, statues, carvings and monuments are historically and aesthetically engaging. And there is a natural beauty and serenity to the landscape; that wonderfully compliments the solemnity of the area. (We could only imagine the impact autumn has on the surroundings.)
One could spend many hours/days exploring this intriguing complex; and we hope to again return and spend more time wandering the grounds.

No. They don't allow that. They only refund ticket purchases in severe weather. Make sure you have a rain coat umbrella and comfortable shoes

How was your stay at the Double Tree? We are thinking of staying there (seems nice and close). I don't think we will make it up this year, but maybe next year and want to go in October... but as you mentioned, I think it will be packed. I'd love to hear any suggestions you may have! Thx!

Our stay was fantastic. Seeing that we arrived during a hurricane on a Friday night, it was great. The hotel is close enough to stay and drive into Sleepy Hallow. I would highly suggest you book ahead what you want to do, as they probably fill up fast during October, especially the plays. We did the tour of the cemetery on our own b/c it cancelled due to weather...and were glad due to the terrain of the cemetery it would have been hard to walk around (especially after the rain). The internet is your best choice for information before the trip. We didn’t find too many touristy shops in the village of Sleepy Hallow, that was a surprise to us. So, if you see something you want somewhere, I would buy it cause you may not see anything like it again.

Yes. No problem. You can park on the grounds in designated areas. It a hilly terrain.
