We took the Staten Island Historical Tour. The guide was great, and we learned a lot. The biggest disappointment was that the Seastreak Ferry boat had filthy windows that you could barely see out of. We popped outside a few times to see, but unfortunately, the weather was too windy to stay there.

Lovely little museum to pass an hour in if you've just gotten off the Staten Island Ferry - it's approx a 5-10 min walk from the ferry terminus. The museum is situated in an old lighthouse depot that used to supply and service every lighthouse around the US! They have a really good array of pictures, stories, trinkets, and displays to look at, plus the staff are incredibly knowledgeable and happy to chat.
As of Feb 2024 the entrance fee was $7 (full price adult, but there are discounts available). The museum pays homage to not only the lighthouse keepers of NYC, but also history, and has information about lighthouses throughout time and their use.
Also to note, the museum is expanding and will eventually move into a new home next door to their current depot, so this is very much an up-and-coming museum that is constantly adding to their collections.

Small but interesting place with good foundational scientific facts about lighthouses and deeper historical information about the people and events around them. Staff is very helpful and knowledgeable. The small gift shop at the front desk is cute and really affordable. Parking situation could be improved; it’s all the way out at the ferry terminal and parking lot (about a 5 min walk). Very clean restrooms.

Niche but fascinating museum with amazingly friendly, welcoming and well informed guides. As someone who grew up for a few years as a lighthouse keeper's daughter it was particularly interesting but I think anyone would find the little panels about particular lighthouse keepers, men and women, really intriguing. Doesn't take long to go around, has a short film to watch as well. I hope they get the funds needed to expand as per their plans into a neighbouring building.

Lovely little museum.
We struggled to find it as it’s down a bit of a curved road and the signage had been covered by some construction work on the main road.
Lovely staff who were helpful and attentive in the correct measure.
Surprisingly interesting subject. Would recommend.

If you’re mobility challenged (I need a cane to walk) forget this museum. There are NO parking spaces at the museum. The entire area around the museum is a tow away zone.
We parked out front next to another car and before we could walk up to the door, a museum employee came outside to tell us that we can’t park there. The nearest parking is now at the SI Ferry terminal or at the Empire Outlets. That would mean a considerable walk from (paid) parking to the museum building. I just couldn’t do it. I really wanted to see the museum. Sad.

They have models of every lighthouse in America and several international. There are fascinating exhibits on the history since this once was the central depot supplying all lighthouses in the US. It's at a cool waterfront location next to the ferry terminal with views of Brooklyn, Manhattan and the Verrazzano Narrows bridge. But the best part was Jim, the docent. So enthusiastic and knowledgeable in all things lighthouse and a lot of other history. They are planning major expansions in the years to come, including buildings related to when they became a part of the Coast Guard.

During our trip to New York from England we decided to visit the Lighthouse Museum after getting the ferry across.
Our opinion is that the museum is excellent, I cannot speak highly enough about the staff who were enthusiastic, extremely knowledgeable and very friendly. We found the displays modern and easy to follow, also there is a great 5 minute video to watch.
I would highly recommend that anyone planning to get the orange ferry from New York can find the time to walk the 5 minutes from the Staten island ferry terminal to this little gem of a museum. The museum is looking to move next door in the future and we will certainly be going back to visit.

Small, but nice. Wonderful display of models of lighthouses. Explanation of lighthouse lenses and biographies of lighthouse keepers. At beginning of visit, an extremely well-informed and passionate docent gives an excellent welcoming talk. Combined w/ a ride f/ Manhattan on the Staten Island Ferry, this is a very enjoyable for anyone/everyone who loves lighthouses.

Jim is an amazing, responsive tour docent in the museum. I’m pretty sure he knows everything about lighthouses and could talk about any aspect at length, but if you ask a question he immediately switches gears. This is my favorite thing in NYC so far - small and not crowded but interesting.

Yes we do! We have special edition note cards (with envelope) and postcards, all of Staten Island local lighthouses, and specially made for the National Lighthouse Museum. We also have "standard" postcards, of individual lighthouses, and multiple lighthouses on one card, for 50 cents, or 3 for one dollar. Come in, have a free guided tour with your admission, and look around the shop.
