Stunning!! Beautiful grounds and amazing interiors. Well worth it!! Would recommend to all who like a peak into how the rich lived. All the rooms are beautifully decorated and our guide was full of interesting facts on the families who’ve owned it.

Last but not least on our recent New England Tour, we went to the Lyndhurst Gothic Mansion in Tarrytown NY. This is a Gothic Revival style mansion, sitting on a beautiful estate overlooking the Hudson River. Our tour began with a film in the carriage house, telling of the history and interesting details of the property. We were taken on a detailed tour of the mansion itself by a very knowledgeable and personable guide. She told us of both the families that had owned the mansion, and the history of its construction, additions and renovations. The architecture and décor were quite elaborate and well crafted. The views from the property were beautiful. The grounds were beautiful in fall colors, and were cared for immaculately. This was a fitting “last stop” on our tour of New England.

I have not been to this mansion at any other time but we did go for the Lyndhurst After Dark and it was a great experience. The decorations were great and everyone did an excellent job telling us about the history of the mansion and the times. I was unsure it was going to feel very "Halloween - y" but it was perfect, with a focus on victorian practices and beliefs around death and the holiday plus spiritualism and seances, etc.

This was our third visit to the stately and historic gothic mansion of Lyndhurst. The first time multiple decades ago we took a regular tour, a few years ago we did an evening Halloween tour with all the ghosts, and this year for Halloween we attended in the day, and also stopped by the Gothic Marketplace.
The house is simply stunning, especially for those who love and appreciate Victorian architecture and decor. Each room is full of magnificent furniture, and one can certainly imagine the families living here and enjoying the glorious estate. The river views are phenomenal. The stained glass window with the angel in the Grand Gallery is one of my favorite designs.
The very first time I visited I decided I wanted to model my dining room in the Lyndhurst style, because I was so impressed with all the intricate detail and elegant design.
Of course, I am also a Dark Shadows fan, and I understand why the producers chose this mansion to represent the home of vampires, werewolves and witches!
Yes, magnificent Lyndhurst is definitely a national treasure, and highly recommended to visit.

This is a mansion with a lot of history. I booked my tour online - which I definitely recommend doing. There are many different tours and times to choose from, so it's nice to be able to study them and choose the one for you. Our tour guide was excellent. Not only did he do an excellent job of explaining everything, he also looked after several guests on the tour who had special needs. The house is very nicely decorated, with nearly all furnishings original to the final owner of the house. There are also extensive grounds and outbuildings to explore, so be sure to build in time for these.

First-time visitors to the Lyndhurst mansion, but not to Tarrytown or Sleepy Hollow - this tour is highly recommended. There are plenty of awe-inspiring and breathtaking views, but learning the history of the home and the families that lived in it was worth the cost of the tour alone! Our tour guide was Rick (on our trip he wore an awesome jack-o-lantern earring) and honestly, you can tell from his level of knowledge how much he loves his job. I would highly recommend requesting Rick for your tour of Lyndhurst!

Our tour guide Nathan was entertaining and informative. The estate is well maintained with original furniture from the families that owned this mansion. We did the 1 hour classic tour which was great. We will definitely return to do the more expansive tour. Also don't miss walking to see the bowling alley building.

August 2024 was a great time of year to see this site on a semi-cool day. We really enjoyed the historic mansion, and its outbuildings. The grounds/buildings are being supported by donors...which means some construction is in progress. We are hardy, but people with walking disabilities may not be able to see the entire grounds. Visitors can also see a gallery with exhibits that change quarterly. It is closed during January-March. The price is very reasonable...and kids would enjoy seeing the Gould playhouse.

And again - another excellent Gilded Age mansion tour. We are currently hooked on watching the HBO TV series The Gilded Age and it was great fun to tour Lyndhurst that was and is continuing to be used as a set in this series.
Our guide was very good, entertaining and informative and brought the property to life. The grounds are pretty and the location, like so many other mansions around here, sublime.
The staff in the gift shop were very chatty and gave some gossip/insights into the TV series which was fun to hear. Of note was a mug with the elevation of the house wrapped around it. It was a very elegant souvenir and I shall drink my tea from it whilst continuing to watch Christine Baranski, Cynthia Nixon and Carrie Coon battle it out in 1890's New York!

The grounds, out buildings and main structure are an engrossing complex of natural and man-made beauty.
The tour of the mansion was informative; and an immersion into a wealth of artistry and craftmanship. Our guide was knowledgeable and personable; answering questions as requested.
One can debate the accumulation and ostentatious presentation of wealth; but there is no disputing the result of allowing artisans and skilled workers the resources to create their finest achievements.
Now, we can all appreciate their legacy.
The museum shop has a nice selection of site related items from which to choose; and the staff there were friendly and accommodating.
Suggestion: knowing this may be difficult to achieve, but self-guided audio tours (like some of the Newport mansions provide) would be a wonderful option here.
This allows individuals to move at one's own pace; and the time to really immerse, if one chooses, in the detail, creativity and magnificent beauty before them.
In any case; visiting this site is a true aesthetic uplift.

These are called 'Roam on Your Own' events and are self-guided and self-paced. While they do not include an audio tour, we do have guides stationed in each room to answer any questions you may have! we plan to stop by on out way up to New Paltz on a sat. afraid we won’t make the last 4 pm tour. anyone knows if we’d be able to walk around the grounds & see the mansion fr outside if we don’t do a tour? thnx!

Yes you can, however, you'll pay an entrance fee. It was $5 in July, 2019. The grounds are beautiful and they do allow picnics, but the house is amazing! They often have private events on the grounds, so you need to check at the gate. The park is open til dusk.

I believe that you can. there are 2 separate fees for the property. one is a grounds admission, which gets credited towards the house tour, if you take it.

I've honestly never been to Kykuit but Lyndhurst history Acritetcture and land is absolutey amazing and very affordable!

We flew into Westchester, NY and took a cab to our hotel - the Doubletree Hilton - which is very nice and within walking distance of Lyndhurst. Hope you have a chance to go there - it is a beautiful house and grounds and well worth it.

Yes, tickets can be purchased at the castle, but I would strongly suggest purchasing online prior to your visit. I've seen people turned away due to tickets being sold out.

From the Lyndhurst website: June through September, Tours on the hour: Friday, Saturday, Sunday 10:00 PM to 4:00 PM. Monday, 12:00-4:00 PM. Last Tour at 4:00 PM. I would check the website for other times of the year. Lyndhurst mansion is only available by going on one of their tours. We ordered tickets online before going, and it's worthwhile to do that.
