Lovely pub, lovely food , great staff and a great beer. If I would recommend any pub in Northampton it would be this one

Sunnyside: The Washington Irving Estate is a breathtaking attraction to sightsee and visit and is a major cultural and historical destination of Westchester County, New York.
In celebrating Halloween of 2022, I brought and treated my wife and myself for the “Home Of The Legend,” an annual fall event held at Sunnyside.
At the “Home Of The Legend” my wife and I came across many charming Halloween themed decorations that were placed throughout the estate, and we were able to view and tour inside the historic home of Washington Irving. Several docents who were each dressed in 19th Century attire, provided us with a rich and detailed history of both Irving and Sunnyside.
During our tour, we learned that Washington Irving was one of America’s most famous and most successful author, biographer and historian and is largely credited for developing American based literature and for introducing the American short story. His most notable historical works were biographies on George Washington and Muhammad and his well-known short stories were Rip Van Winkle & The Legend Of Sleepy Hollow. Other noteworthy tidbits on Washington Irving was that he was the first American to derive his income solely from his works and was said to have coined the phrase, “the almighty dollar.”
In addition to learning about Irving, our docents explained the history of Sunnyside. We learned it was acquired by Washington Irving in 1835 and served as his principal residence until 1859, the year of his death. Irving was known for his deep admiration and his emotional attachment of Sunnyside and in a letter to his brother, Peter, he described his estate as “a beautiful spot, capable of being made a little paradise.” Many of his notable works, including his biography on George Washington were written at Sunnyside.
Both my wife and I found Irving’s home to be quite beautiful and we definitely liked its wisteria covered entrance and the stair-step facade featured on both ends of the house. We also liked the house’s riverside coastal setting because we were able to view and enjoy gorgeous scenic views of Hudson River and nearby forests and woodlands.
Inside the home, my wife and I were able to see and examine an extensive collection of
Irving’s original furnishings, and learned about the occupants that either lived or worked there during Irving’s lifetime.
Due to its rich heritage and cultural prominence, Sunnyside: The Washington Estate is listed on our National Register Of Historic Places and has been recognized as a National Historic Landmark.
Both my wife and I would love to thank the Historic Hudson Valley for its efforts on preserving and celebrating this wonderful historic destination and for providing us with an enlightening tour experience!!!
We recommend for everyone to visit this gorgeous landmark when traveling through Westchester Country.

If you are disabled at all, this will be a bit of an ordeal for you. The walk from the parking area to the house involves a hilly switchback trail. It's paved, but it's a lot of walking, so be aware if walking is an issue for you. Aside from that, super charming locale. It's a real step back in time.

You aren't allowed to take pictures inside which is disappointing, but it's still worth a visit. The tour is pretty short (you only get to see the 1st floor in October), but the guides were very knowledgeable and friendly.

Based on many of the Tripadvisor reviews, we scheduled this after the Octagon House tour, and decided that the mystique of Irving at Halloween time might be more interesting than the Lyndhurst or Rockefeller house.
We were mistaken. The 3 rooms you're allowed to see, look like they were built in 1978 with some antique furniture they bought at a resale store. I think the only piece in the house that was original was his desk. I doubt they had wall to wall carpeting in 1820 and ladies didn't dress like Pilgrims.
If you want to learn about Irving and his life, you won't learn it here.
The tickets at $10 were cheap enough, so I guess you get what you pay for.

So full of history and so interesting. Loved also walking the grounds. The tour guides were great and views beautiful. Cute gift shop also

We thoroughly enjoyed our visit to Washington Irving's Sunnyside House on a Sunday in Mid-August. It is a smallish but lovely house set on acres of ground next to the Hudson River. We had a great tour guide (in mid-1800’s period dress) for our house tour. The house is bigger inside than it appears from outside and has many of Irving’s original furnishings, as it was in the Irving family until 1945 when it became a museum. Although the grounds definitely need sprucing up, the house itself appeared to be in very nice shape. Irving led an interesting life and was much more than just the famous Legend of Sleepy Hollow author. We combined this tour with a separate tour of the Sleepy Hollow Cemetery, just a few miles away. They complemented each other nicely. We have visited many “Gilded Age” mansions of the rich and famous and this house that predates that era put a new perspective on what it meant to be rich in the 1840s and 1850s for us. Of course, YMMV as we enjoy all aspects of American history.

This is a wonderfully preserved house with great literary and New York state history. Our guide, Hal, was really excellent. He kept the tour moving while telling us a vast amount of history about Washington Irving and the era. He really got us interested in Irving and was extremely personable and knowledgable.
The house itself is a charmer with an impressive view of the Hudson. We highly recommend visiting it.

I sure would like to know how to purchase tickets online in advanced so we would be able to go inside Washington Irving's home? Is there a way to do that? Please advise.

Yes, tickets can be purchased online through the historic Hudson valley website. Go to the historic Hudson valley website, whose address can't be posted for some reason, and look for tickets on the right hand side. Click that and then select the date on their calendar that you wish to visit. The drop down menu underneath will list all of the places in historic Hudson valley. Select Sunnyside and it will bring you to a list of times they have available that day, proceed from there. Enjoy!

Hi Samantha, There is limited access to the grounds without a ticket. You really can't get much further than the parking lot and the walk to the office. Lyndhurst on the other hand, right next door allows full access to the grounds and views of the river. The only ticketed access there is getting into the house.
Sunnyside was worth the admission though. I hope this response isn't too late. I'm not sure about online tickets, check their website or the Tarry Town visitor's center.
