Would have been interesting, had we'd been allowed to look!

Although the museum was open, every building was locked and unless we had a guide with us, we weren't allowed to look at anything. I prefer to meander through museums at my own speed, having a good look and reading things. We felt that we would be rushed through with the guide, so opted to leave. Signage explaining this method of viewing the museum would have been good.

Mt Barker museum

A very pleasant surprise! Spent 2 hours there with a knowledgeable guide ...very interesting!!!
So much history in one small area.. so glad to see things being preserved for future generations!!

One of the best we have seen

Absolutely wonderful displays, very well set out, labelled and well segmented. We thought we would be in and out in an hour but no....could only fit in 1 1/2 hours first day then went back for another 2 hours next day.. SO please give yourself a few hours as this is a guided tour with well informed guides.

great for a short history lesson short stopover

Have been a number of times previously but still worth a short visit at this impressive old building right on the Albany Highway. So much history and interesting facts on our early settlement of the Mount Barker area.

Great piece of history

So great for my two kids (14 and 12) to see how prison used to be and to show them how Aboriginal people were treated so differently back then. Also let them appreciate their freedom and how harsh the old gaols were. The kids loved looking at the old relics - uniforms, cooking equipment, bedding, tools, the kitchen set up, the room for the warden's daughters. Worth visiting.

Great must do stop!

Roz is a great tour guide. We have driven past so often and finally decided to stop in and have a look. 2 hours was well worth the visit. The amount of history located in the area is incredible. You can do the tour by yourself if you don't have the time. But would highly recommend someone with the knowledge of the area to take you around. The Roses in the garden are beautiful in bloom.
The cost is $5 per person totally worth every cent!!!

A pleasant surprise.

A considerable number of things to see and well presented. Mount Barker is not really on the main tourist drag so it was a pleasant surprise to find a lot of photos, buildings and tools etc from the community.

Amazing historical morning

There was so much more than I expected to the Police Station Museum. I've driven past it many times and from the road it looks as if you can expect to spend 15 minutes looking round, but we were there for around 2 hours. Not only does the museum include the old police station, but also school rooms, mason's house, old farming equipment as well as Aboriginal exhibits plus many other historical artefacts. Our guide Donna was enthusiastic and answered many of our questions. The gardens are beautiful and well maintained by volunteers. This was $5 well spent and I'm amazed it didn't cost more. Thanks so much, we'll certainly visit again soon.
