Tried to go to sams point, but the parking lot was full. This was ten minutes away. It’s a great hike up to the ridge. Nice views.

My friend who knew there took me to walk the first time in Woodstock. It was a not difficult trail. It was amazing view of the waterfall. There were many people enjoy the cold water, too.

We drove 44 55 through the Shawangunk Mountains, stopping to hike at Minnewaska State Park. The drive was windy but relaxing. Great views with lots of pull over areas to get out and stretch and take pics.

A must visit for outdoor enthusiasts.
Awesome hiking, mountain biking and my favorite rock climbing. An abundance of unspoiled naturally beautiful woods, cafes and cool antique shops.
Lots of fun!

We have been there twice so far, it is nice place to visit year round. In summer the fall and pond is great place to cool down. In winter it would be perfect skiing spot.

Our friends are from the area and well acquainted with these mountains and have done lots of hiking here, but we were just returning to Poughkeepsie from Lake Cayuga and took the route home through the mountains. The road is winding but there are a series of lookout stops which afford the visitor with phenomenal views and great photo opportunities. If you do not have the time to hike, or are not physically able to do it, the ride through these mountains is still very worth the effort, as the scenery on both sides (going up and going down) is breath taking.

However try to go on a week day or early in the day on weekends to avoid the crush. The walk to Gertrude's Nose is fantastic, as is the walk to Verkeeder Falls. Many many other incredible, scenic, and not too tough walks. The stroll around Minnewaska Lake is easy and the views are to die for. The signage at the trail junctions is very good, however, the maps the state gives out stink. For planning purposes and to keep yourself oriented on the trails I suggest a good map set. You can get a good set, cheap, from the NYNJ Trail Conference and they're also sold on Amazon and in many outdoor stores in the area. Well worth the small price.

The Gunks are one of our favorite outdoor climbing areas in the Northeast. The draw is due to the ease of access to many of the routes especially at the Trapps area. The climbing in the area is diverse and challenging for all skill levels. Trad skills are definitely a must to have to really explore the climbs here due to the number of unbolted routes. Many routes have top anchors which makes cleaning and top roping possible. We also love coming to the Gunks because after a long day of climbing, its a short walk or drive to Coxing kill where we can go free hiking to a nude sunbathing and swimming hole to cool off. And Stony Kill Falls is near by and there is also a skinny dipping pool at the top of the falls. Camping at the Gunks is now very convenient due to the opening of the fairly new AAC campground near the Trapps climbing area. We look forward to going to the Gunks every year to explore more of the routes in the area.
