Restful, lovely dose of nature in the city

The butterfly & hummingbird garden are located inside the Lenoir Preserve and are a nice addition to the Preserve, although it's very small. It's easy to miss as it's a small (about 8 x10 feet, I'd say) area fenced off area off one of the walking paths. It's not always open & I imagine the fencing is there to keep out the deer, which are plentiful in the Preserve. The butterfly garden is at it's best in late spring or summer, of course, but Lenoir Preserve is worth a visit any time of year. It's well maintained without being overly groomed so it retains the feel of a natural landscape. It's clearly the site of an old estate or school, perhaps because you can see the footprint of building foundations, stairs, walls, etc around the Preserve. It's like a peek into the Guilded Age when Rt. 9 was the site of the summer homes of the robber barons and old money from NYC. Not as extensive or developed as Untermyer, but a lovely, unspoiled respite from city life. You can take a leisurely, undemanding walk, or venture into the wooded areas for a more strenuous outing. If you enjoy bird-watching, don't forget your binoculars because you're in for a treat. I've seen the usual robins, cardinals and bluejays, but also owls, hawks, a few small vultures, mockingbirds and some blackcapped chickadees. Unfortunately, I've yet to see a hummingbird here, but that's a question of luck & timing.

Either way, enjoy the unspoiled natural beauty, glimpses of the Hudson and the deer who always make an appearance. We've even seen a fox or two.
