My daughter begged us to go gem mining so we did. No real reason why we selected Foggy Mountain over others in the area. We went to the facility off 321 and purchased the smallest bucket (there are only three of us). We left with half a bag of gems and my seven year old was thrilled!
After we found our gems, one of the employees sorted them for us and showed us what the looked like polished. We did opt to turn one into a pendant for my daughter. I did appreciate that the employee told us not so spend the money on the silver chain as we could get better somewhere else.
Not the highlight of my trip and a bit touristy for me, but my daughter absolutely loved it.

This place underpromises and overdelivers. This is a great place to visit as you can enjoy it rain or shine. I was concerned that my 12 year old would be bored by doing this activity as he thought it was for "little kids." Once we got started, all four of us in the group were having a blast (including my parents, myself, and my son). We purchased the 5 gallon bucket of rocks and it took us about 45 minutes to mine all of our gems. (we had 2-3 of us working at any given time). Once all of our gems were collected we met with a sorter and he helped us identify what we had found and showed us what each of them was used for.
The staff were incredibly friendly and so knowledgeable. You have the option to have your gems cut and polished for a cost which we did for a couple of them. With the purchase of the 5 gallon pail we got one gem of a certain type cut and polished for free.
There is a great gift shop here as well which we found several items in to take home with us.
I cannot recommend this place enough. Do not pass it by!

Our family has a tradition to always go to Boone Thanksgiving Friday, spend the night, eat at Daniel Boone Inn and cut a tree on Saturday. Well, we are adding a stop at the Foggy Mtn. Gem Mine to that tradition from now on! On our way home we decided to stop and do some gem mining with the kids (ages 10, 4 and 1) along with Mom, Dad and YaYa. We got a $70 bucket and each of us found several nice pieces...we got another $70 bucket; it was so fun! Staff was very helpful and knowledgeable and were great with the kids. When we were done sifting through, they set out all our bags of gems and showed us what types of stones we had. I ended up having a few pieces polished and will be made into jewelry. Definitely a super friendly and family fun outing.

Shared a bucket and found lots of small little items. Afterwards, they will go through your finds and tell you about each gem. Employees were super friendly.

First time customer. We went for me and my husband’s 15th year wedding anniversary. Overall very knowledgeable, nice experience. We purchased the “big daddy “ 70$ bucket and I made a jasper, tigers eye pendant. That I can’t wait to receive. We also purchased two smooth stones for our teen boys who stayed at home, while we had all the fun ;)

A great way to spend some family time and learn about some of the beautiful stones that we might otherwise easily miss. A smaller bucket for a young family will do the trick, but I recommend working your way through a mother lode, which keeps older elementary and teens, as well as the adults, entertained for well over an hour. Great anytime, but especially when you have a rainy period. The staff are very helpful and go through your “finds” with you. And with the “mother lode”, you get one each - a cut and polished stone (faceted) and a polished oval. Our last visit got us a cut citrine and a polished tiger’s eye.

Have been to six gem mines around Asheville and Boone areas. This one is at the bottom of the list. Bought a $70 bucket and most meager find of any gem mine. They had us put the non-special rocks (almost all of them) back inside a bucket. I’m sure those were recycled. Six people ‘working’ and no one outside seeing how people are doing. They were visiting with each other or on their cellphones. Best mines are nearby Doc’s Rocks, Gem Mountain, Rio Doce and Elijah Mountain. Stay away from this one.

Oh my goodness this was so much fun. We bought the small $30 dollar bucket was enough for 3 adults to have fun with. You sift through rocks and sand as you did in the gold rush days with water and a sifter. We got lots of awesome semi precious and precious stones. I would do this again if I could with my grandchildren if we lived in the area. Definitely recommend.

I didn't have high expectations for this spot, but it really impressed me. We have two littles, but one was snoozing in the car and we didn't want to interrupt, so my husband went in with our oldest and got set up. They were having so much fun, he wanted me to join in, so he came out and we traded off and I went in to finish up the gem mining and participate in the classifying and categorizing of the stones. This was interesting to me and I was shocked at how much we found! I would have LOVED to have some of our stones cut, but we didn't have time (or two adults in the room to discuss) the options of that, so we just brought them all home. A fantasticly fun experience! Of course, my oldest would say the highlight was the rock candy! Ha!

You get buckets. Depending on the size is the price. We have done this for years and I can't count on how many times we have gone to foggy mountain but always get the mother loads which I believe is $110 a 5 gal bucket I think is $70. I've been to all the gem mining in the area and this is far the best for you buck. Staff is awesome.

You will be purchasing a "bucket" of rocks - there is a bucket size to fit any budget. One or many in your party can sift and find gems. You get to keep ALL of your gems - in fact they actually go through your discarded pile to ensure you didn't accidentally mistake a gem for a rock.
You can sift inside or outside (depending on weather). There is no "tour", but there are plenty of gems in glass cabinets and on display that you can check out.
