We went in the afternoon during the middle of the week. We chose to do just the tour, but it was only 4 small cabins. The tour guide was nice, but didn't seem incredibly knowledgeable. There was no one else around but the tour guide. The whole place looked abandoned. I was hoping for more people in costume with more of a history lesson. Kind of a let down.

Adjoining the Farmer’s Market we found the ‘Horn in the West’ Daniel Boone Amphitheater as well as the Hickory Ridge Living History Museum compound where Marrena Greer welcomed us to a guided tour of what life was like when the Western North Carolina high country was first being settled. Focused on the period of 1785 - 1805, the museum provides insight into the self-sufficiency of our forefathers by highlighting the skills they possessed such as hearth side cooking, spinning, candle making, and blacksmithing. Btw, ‘Horn in the West’ is celebrating its 70th season this summer!

My husband was a history teacher so we thought this would be an interesting place to go. We were correct. We took the tour which was only $8. Our guide was very knowledgeable about the history of the cabins. We got to go into each cabin which represented a different way of living back in the late 1700’s. I recommend if you are in the area.

Nice cultural center with six restored cabins showing life in the 1800s around Boone, NC. It was not busy and we got a private guided tour. Our guide was very friendly and knowledgeable. Also dog friendly. They even let the dogs in the cabins

We hit this place on a hot afternoon in August when there was no breeze. Pretty much had the place to ourselves. The guide was a grad student with a lot of enthusiasm and knowledge about it. The adjacent outdoor theater was to have the last show of The Horn in the West that evening. Will have to save that one for next year. Way back in the time the cabins were inhabited, one prominent family somehow squeezed a big family into a haven about the size of a modern bedroom. That fact and other anecdotes feed the imagination. In the high season this must have a lot more activity than when we were visiting. To the guide's credit, he kept us entertained as he walked us through each site and made it worthwhile to see.

Really enjoyed our visit. Guide was very knowledgeable about the cabins and the area. We enjoyed walking through the cabins and learning about the pioneer way of life. Highly recommend.

We visited the Hickory Ridge Living History Museum late in the afternoon on July 7, the day we were going to see the outdoor drama, Horn in the West. Although there were several costumed staff, we were informed that they were done during guided tours for the day. The only cabin we could enter was the one where there was a woman in costume who explained about spinning and weaving. We were unable to enter the other cabins and they were too dark inside to see very much. There were two men in costume throwing axes. It would have been nice if one of them would have explained more about the cabins. My husband and I felt as if we wasted our $16 admission and do not recommend this unless the cabins are open with a tour guide available.

What a cute little place tucked in the middle of nowhere There is a walking tour on the hour where a narrator in period costume takes you around cabins that have been created to portray the history of that time Guided tours on the hour All outdoors

Very much enjoyed our visit to the Hickory Ridge Museum. Guide was wonderful in explaining the lives of the early settlers who occupied the cabins on the property. Beautiful grounds also.

As an historical reenactor myself ( fur trade to 1890) i was pleased to see the level of detail and commitment the staff had even under these Covid times...its a shame I couldn’t see the play with all its players!
