We were down in the OBX for spring break last March and on the nastiest day (weather-wise, raining cats and dogs), we stopped over at the lighthouse. We took some time looking in the gift shop and then walked over to the keeper's house. The time we were down before that, it was Thanksgiving, so EVERYTHING was closed! I hadn't been in the keeper's house with my kids. They have a fun scavenger hunt that had us all engaged and my oldest started a Junior Ranger Badge, that we finished up in the next few days and returned to Bodie Island Light for the actual badge and stamp...this is a great program for kids! Highly recommend! The scaffolding was just going up at this point, so lots of work to come in the next few years...glad to have climbed it years ago. And, we brought a picnic, so I'm so thankful for the outdoor teaching pavilion area. We were able to eat lunch *mostly* sheltered from the weather!

Being one of my favorite Lighthouses wa made a stop at Cape Hatteras on our trip to the Outer Banks. We were surprised to see it completely surrounded in scafolding. The lighthouse was moved in 1999 (we got to see that too), but had never gone through a restoration. They are bringing it back to life by removing the 21 coats of paint and repainting, repairing damaged bricks, treating the metalwork and restoring the light. It will reopen in late 2025 and be available for climbing in teh summer of 2026.

The first thing to know is that the lighthouse is undergoing a renovation, and it cannot be climbed at this time. It is surrounded by scaffolding, and the paint has been removed, so what you can see looks more like Currituck Lighthouse than Hatteras. It will be several more months before the renovations are complete. We thought it was interesting and cool to see the lighthouse bricks as they were when the lighthouse was constructed. It's still an interesting place to visit. Please don't be upset with the park rangers or gift store clerks. It's not their fault these renovations are being done.

Third time I visited this light house and have never been disappoint. This is a great place to visit with family, couples or alone. Lot's to see and do in the area. Very enjoyable.

We could not walk up into the lighthouse since they are doing restoration, but seeing it is still amazing. The museum is very informative and to see the video on how they moved the lighthouse is amazing. They have a gift shop as well.

Although the lighthouse is under restoration, you can still walk up close and take pictures. We were here when they were moving the lighthouse and came back to see it now. The Museum of the Sea is right next door and the WWII British Sailor Cemetery is also on Lighthouse Rd.(there is no mention of this on Tripadvisor, and is NOT the one in Ocracoke!! This cemetery is technically considered British territory. Its a short drive within the National Park on Lighthouse Road). We loved the Museum of the sea and spent a great deal of time learning more history.

Fantastic state park. We highly recommend visiting. We were off season when we went exploring to the southern most part of the OBX.
If visiting in summer, grab water, sunblock, hat and flip flops. Explore the beautiful beach, go shelling, be mindful if swimming and only swim where there are lifeguards on duty. We saw many ocean rip currents and we both enjoy swimming however, we are forever mindful of our surroundings before we venture in for a dip.
If you do not know what a rip current looks like, take the time, educate yourself and your party and ask a lifeguard on duty.
The museum is tastefully done and the park ranger staff is excellent, professional and most informative. The history of the light house, its keepers and then the task of relocating is fascinating.
We highly recommend venturing into the national park.

Very nice to too this famous lighthouse! The lighthouse can be viewed from miles away! Lots of photo opportunities. You can tour the lighthouse seasonally, and you can view the keepers houses and go in them. You can see the path they took the lighthouse when they had to move it. Lots of displays on that move too. Tours of the houses are free and parking is free, you can also go the beach on the old location.

My husband and I got to take photos and do some exploring. We couldn’t climb as it’s under construction. We were able to see the original site of the lighthouse and the path it took to its new location. We went through the gift shop and the lady behind the counter was very knowledgeable. I would love to go back when we can climb the lighthouse.

I will be visiting Nov 7 and 8, will the lighthouse be open?

Right now the governor of North Carolina is not making another announcement until the end of September as far as any new guidelines with COVID. The lighthouse itself is open year round but right now and for the foreseeable future you cannot climb it due to COVID.
One more thing if you get the chance check out Bodie Island lighthouse. It’s about an 1 or so away. It’s not as tall as Hatteras but with the scenery around it, much more beautiful.

Are dogs allowed on the lighthouse grounds? Planning a vacation to Hatteras Island and my Labrador is coming with just wondered if he would be allowed on grounds. Prob won’t go to the top if he’s with me.

Pets are allowed on the grounds, but not in the lighthouse or any buildings.

Dogs are allowed on the Cape Hatteras lighthouse grounds, but not in the buildings. They must be kept on a leash, no longer than 6 feet, at all times.

Is it hard to climb the steps? It's so hard on me to climb steps as it is..if it's not for hand rails I wouldn't be able to climb any steps...I step one at at time..

Hi Marta - Go to the "Double Lightkeeper's House" - on the 1st floor, in an air-conditioned small theater, they show a movie on demand which has a young park ranger walking from the bottom to the top of the light-house, explaining a lot of the history and showing you the views you would see if you climbed. We have 4 young children and it wouldv'e cost us $48 to clmb so we skipped the climb, and found the movie quite satisfactory as a supplementary experience - and its free!

My sister who is a 9 year old was barley able to climb it. (Or she was a nine year old) I think that only your 6 year old could come. Idk exactly, but I don’t think anyone older than 5 can come.
