This is great museum, very well organized, but with lots of reading to do. Small, but well worth the $12.00. I bought a book from gift shop, so I could read it at my leisure, rather than standing and reading the plaques in the museum. But, well worth going to.

Be sure to include the passion play and visit to the Indian Village. These three events provide an immersive introduction to all the terrible injustices we did to the Cherokee Nation.

Don't skip this museum while in Cherokee. Our whole family including teens enjoyed the visit here. The exhibits are beautiful and educational.

I think the museum I saw may be called two different names. The pictures other's posted are the same one's I saw at the Museum of the Cherokee Indian. I will just post my info here also.
Beautiful museum but felt the cashier could have been more helpful. This museum focuses on the history, culture and plight of the Cherokee tribe. It starts with some of their origin stories on boards. Very interesting, like a parable. Afterwards, you enter a room to watch a 4” animated film before starting the museum tour.
MY ISSUE: Be sure to get the audio guide. It was not mentioned when we bought our tickets. I just happened to see the device when turning the corner. How to use it was not clearly explained either. There are white badges with an emblem, hanging throughout the museum. You just touch the end of the device to this badge and it begins playing the audio. There are also black “scanner-like” boxes on the wall that are supposed to play when you enter the area, but that did not happen most of the time. If you tap the box with your device, it will start the audio. Several people asked where we got the device, when I told them, they said they did not know. It is written on the bottom of a small display on the desk, but the cashiers should ask everyone who buys a ticket if they would like the audio guide.
This museum was very interesting. It basically takes you through the history of the tribe. There was a young lady weaving near the display with the confederate flag. She will explain what it really means and why the Cherokee fought with the confederates during the war. She mentioned there are plans to update this part of the history because the audio really promotes the Confederate side of the issue. She also said that most of the information regarding the dress and dances you see around are just for tourist who want photo ops, etc. This museum was well worth the stop and the money. Displays are beautiful with great example of the skills of these native people. $12 for adults, $2 for audio tour – WORTH IT!
P.S. I went to the store across the street (the young lady recommended it as having authentic items) and purchased several pieces (jewelry, bowl, and lanyard).

Excellent museum. Historically accurate. Shows the Cherokee story through time. I greatly appreciated the Trail of Tears Story. The US Government has quite a few fences to mend.

The grounds begin your tour, 10 feet tall sun flowers line the building. Beautiful flowers abound! Perfect place for great and fun pictures! Inside? Displays galore with detailed stories of how the Cherokee Indians crafted and used all items. Small Fee. Worth the time! Worth the money! SAVE OUR US HISTORY!!

Before you enter there is an entrance fee. Once you enter there you will experience a informative, historical story of the Cherokee people. Beautiful display of artifacts along with an informational detail. There is a separate area that covers the trail of Tears which is informative and truly heart breaking. At the end of the tour there is a gift shop that you can visit. Very well worth the visit.

How long does it take to go through the museum?

There are so many things to read and films to watch, it depends on whether you want to absorb a great deal or more or less walk through. Assuming you want to absorb as much as you can, I would break it down in the following way;
Tom Hanks narrated movie (a little extra cost beyond admission)
48 minutes.....so about 1 hour taken up.
The Europeon Theater 3 hours
The Pacific Theater 2 hours
So, I estimate 6 hours to try to soak it all up. It may be longer or shorter for some depending on individual pace. The museum is on two sides of the street. The Europeon Theater is in the building where you purchase tickets. The Hanks narrated movie (with special effects now) and the Pacific Theater is on the other side of the street. There is also a section on North Africa and Italy on that side of the street.

How is this different from the "Museum of the Cherokee Indian"? Are they both equally as good? If you had to pick only one to visit, which would it be?

I visited the museum in Oklahoma, and the one in Cherokee NC. Both are good. The one in North Carolina is better. So if you only go to one, pick North Carolina. If you do go, don't miss on the outside tour. They have a summer dwelling and a winter dwelling. Some archery and game skills are demonstrated. The gift shop and book selection is also good. Hope that helps.
