Take your little ones from toddler to teens and enjoy hands-on play areas, physics areas, animal displays, planetarium shows, and an aquarium! What a fabulous place in this small community. We are members and take our little ones frequently. They are never bored!

my 30 year old daughter and I had so much fun on our recent visit! The skelton light projection thing was spectacular.

A wonderful and true community center. The foundation puts together great events and shows for the community. Very clean and very safe for the entire family. Kid friendly. Elderly friendly. An overall outstanding place.

Recently visited for the first time to take my young nieces and was very pleasantly surprised by the CSS. I felt the exhibits were very interesting and of very good quality, particularly for a community as relatively small as Hickory. My nieces had a great time and hands-on stations were fun and actually working. Even my not easily impressed teen daughter has gone separately and was complimentary. We will be back.

Geared more toward kids than adults. But still, lots of interesting things to see/do/read. I enjoyed all of the variety. Small children will have a great time here since many of the activities are 'hands-on'. There is free parking in their lot & around the building. Additionally, there is an interesting art gallery across the hall that will interest adults (more than children). I think I took my time exploring and was there f/~90 minutes. This is a great place to visit if you have children w/you (I didn't .. but the kid-in-me enjoyed it anyway :)

Decent science center for the area, not updated much but some renovations (i.e. same dated stuff throughout the center). The touch area in the aquarium is closed and when we visited (8/12/21), there were quite a few displays not working/out of order. The gift shop is lacking as well, it's ok but compared to other science centers in the state it needs work. They also had some foam exhibit in the large room near the entrance, it was so so but very boring to my sons, they spent maybe 5 minutes max in there, in my opinion that is wasted space that could house so much more. And the biggest complaint is they had a full room (STEM?) promoting nothing but gender equality / female rights BS, this has no place in a children's science center, I'm sure it makes the boys feel really appreciated in that room but it's a sign of the sickness in society now. So if your bored and have an hour to waste this place is......meh, ok for the most part.

Went here on a whim while driving back from another destination. We only had an hour before they closed so I thought we would have to rush through. My son wasn’t real impressed, think it was more geared toward younger kids, under 10.

There is a lot to see and do. The science museum offers some great activities for the entire family. There is a lot of history surrounding many of these buildings. I glad that they preserved and restored these older buildings. There is also a very nice art museum. The library is located beside the science museum.
There is also a music venue, for the choral society and I believe also for symphonies.
I enjoy walking around the outside grounds. There is a lot of neat stuff to see on the outside.

so much to see here, great for kids that are bored, get out of the house and visit, so worth the effort. you want regret it...

The Science Center is a great day trip for parents with children. Fridays are free! Lots of hands on activities for kids and adults, I always enjoy it too!

Do you rent our areas for a party? I am told you were a school in the past that my father in law went to and he is turning 80 this year.

Hi Dave, yes I did graduate from Hickory High in 1965 and have enjoyed taking our grandchildren there about once a year now that it is a Science Center. I wish I had an answer to your question about booking a party there but when I called to find out for you, they were already closed. I don't know where they would block off an area for your party unless it is in the Chorale area which used to be the band room. You may have access to water there. Here is their number in case you would like to contact them during the day: (828) 322-8169. Good luck and tell him 'Happy Birthday' from a fellow student!!!

2 miles north on nc highway 127 there are kid friendly restaurants. the highway is aka 2nd street nw at that location.
mcdonalds, with a playground, is on the left. dantes is on the right.

There are child friendly restaurants approximately 2 miles north on NC Highway 127, which borders the Science Center grounds on the west. NC Highway 127 is also known as 2nd Street NW at that location. McDonalds is on the left and Dante's is on the right as you travel North. Dante's does not have a playground.

When did they start charging admission to the science center? it and the planetarium used to be free yet the lady attendant said they have always charged which is not true, when Did they start requiring an admission charge?

From what i understand they still offer a free day every so often. check their website, they should list when the next one is.
