Shown around by a couple of very enthusiastic volunteers, my wife and I really enjoyed the visit .
The added bonus was that we managed to chat to one of the Archaeologists who were busy digging in the area.
It is amazing to think of the history in this area.

The Burghead visitors centre is fairly compact but contains a lot of information within it. There is also a viewing area overlooking the sea with binoculars supplied.
The staff could not be friendlier or more welcoming. Entry is by donation. My wife and i really enjoyed our visit.

The visitor centre is small, however the lady who greeted us gave us plenty of information.
It is well set out and the location is marvellous, take time to walk around the head, the town and if you are feeling energetic the beach and forest.
A lovely little spot which used to be something a lot more impressive.

The former coastguard lookout of Burghead is now the site of the Burghead Visitors centre. A local history museum, the visitor centre tells the story of Burghead from the iron age to the late 20th century. Although small, there's lots of information packed inside and very engaging. The centre is also the site of an iron age Pictish fort and some of the finds are on display here. The most significant of them are probably the slabs depicting the Burghead Bull.

Unfortunately the visitors ctr was closed. However you can climb steps to the viewing point, spectacular views to be had. If you are lucky you may see dolphins or whales.

PLEASE NOTE: Because of current restrictions at the time of this visit (end July 2020), the inner part of this Visitor Centre was closed and the review is of the outer part and surroundings only.
This old coastguard lookout building has the best, high, all-round public viewpoint in Burghead and is normally celebrated as a small, but very important, museum run by volunteers.
Unfortunately, because of current restrictions, the inside wasn't open to visitors when we were there at the end of July, but the Brochers - as locals are known - have made sure there is plenty to do and see, leaving open the winding stair with its lighthouse-style whitewashed walls, and with plenty of information and illustrations at the top.
We saw children delighting in the experience of the climb and adults - like ourselves - thrilled to discover the identity of the many mountains we could see across the sea to the north and overland in other directions. It had been puzzling us since we arrived as we'd expected, at the most, to see a wee bit of the Highlands from Burghead, but on a very, very clear day, it's said you can see into eight Scottish counties. Certainly, we were amazed that we could see as far north as Helmsdale and beyond, but we didn't know that until we saw the helpful circular chart.
The little building houses Burghead history going back at least 1,600 years, and we hope to come back to visit its innards some day, but all around there are other poignant or fascinating sights connected to the sea.
These ranged from the anchor-and-stone memorial to all Brochers lost at sea in peacetime and war to some curious metal bollards sunk into the earth beside the coastguard houses. An information board told us they were cannon from Napoleonic (early 1800s) wars - indeed they do look as though they've got cannon balls for lids - but we couldn't work out if they were local and defensive or battle trophies ... or simply from wrecks.
More fascinating heritage to chase up ... thank you Burghead for so many interesting and enjoyable experiences.

Sadly as we came in early March the visitor centre was still closed. Despite that the views from the top are superb, and it overlooks an originalPictish Fort. There is also an interesting information board near the entrance which describes all the points of interest in the town.

The old coastguard station is a lovely place to visit.Plenty of binoculars etc to search for wildlife. The views are fantastic. The Centre itself has so much to see with lots of display boards all round the walls. There is a video of the Burning of the Clavie which takes place every January. The two volunteers Bell and Jess who were there when we visited were so knowledgeable and friendly. Thank you for the blether. It was hard to believe we were standing on top of an old Pictish village but the huge display case showed the extent of it.

To see the original fort and visit the centre is fantastic. A wonderful step back in time and educational too.
