Friends took us here in the morning. Such an informative spot to learn local history. Beautiful old antique items, clothing and tools

This museum was a great surprise. Very interesting and lots to see. We spent a lot of time there and really enjoyed it.

You need to go up the stairs and be buzzed in to enter as only a total of 10 ppl can enter due to COVID. Also, the sign says last entry is at 4pm but if you don't arrive earlier, they may not let you in. Im glad I persisted and kept returning.
Upon entry upstairs, you'll see lots of artifacts but the most important stuff you must visit is the Trail of Tears history DOWNSTAIRS! I was weeping at their pain and shocked by the truth that every American ought to learn. Andrew Jackson has a whole different meaning now.
TIP - Visit the Cherokee Museum in Cherokee, NC which has soooo much more history to teach. It's 100x more information but there is lots taught here that isnt taught in Cherokee.
Admission rates are $3 for adults, $1 for kids and Free for Military/Vets. Military personnel especially should visit! The military in the 1800's were under orders by Andrew Jackson basically to "relocate" the Indians but in essence that's how they were killed off. The military blindly followed orders even though they knew what they were doing was wrong. It is also so important for middle schoolers and older kids to visit.

I was in Murphy taking care of some family business and saw the museum. I was killing some time and decided to stop and check it out. The museum has an extensive collection of Indian artifacts and local history within its four walls. I was impressed with the Indian artifacts. The displays demonstrating the usage various tools, housing and clothing, along with an extensive and detailed explanation of the Trail of Tears was fascinating to say the least. The staff is well versed in local and regional history and can answer most questions. Along with being very knowledgeable, they are some of the friendliest people you`d ever wanna meet, I tip my hat to ya`ll and thank you for the introduction to the local history of Murphy, NC...

What a museum! We spent almost 2 hours here and barely touched on all that’s exhibited here! Very enlightening! Be sure to make time to visit!

They could have covered the history of the Cherokee people so much better (and I was hoping that was what I was going to see). But if you just enjoy looking at local exhibits and learning about some local history, it was okay....I guess. Unfortunately they were doing some painting the day we were there. Between the heat in the building (so hot inside) and the paint fumes I started feeling sick and eventually had to walk outside to wait for my husband. They should have painted on a day they were closed or after hours. They also created a tripping hazard with the crumpled sheets on the floor. Their exhibits were native artifacts, drawings, photographs, pottery, farm equipment, and way too many arrowheads. I kept turning to my husband and saying "not more arrowheads". If you have some time to kill it might be worth checking out since it was only $3 to enter...maybe.

Nice museum, on the small side. People who work here are very knowledgeable. Sad that the US government stole this property from the indigenous people.

First, I am mobility challenged and was pleased that I could walk in the lower level and catch an elevator to the second floor. The exhibits are not set up in a linear fashion, instead they are divided by section, topically. What a great exhibit. But I didn't want to just look at exhibits that had no meaning to me. The curator was the highlight of this visit. He was so informed and made every item sound like a wonderful story full of context and meaning. Here's what you do. Go upstairs, walk briefly through the exhibits to get your bearings. Ask the historian there to walk you through and tell you stories or you could just ask questions of exhibits that interested you. Plus, we found,for sale a DVD cop;y of Disney's movies, Song of the South. What? For $20? It was a rare, rare find. Enjoy.

We visited the museum in December of 2018 and were very pleased to find it to be interesting, historical and educational. It is nice to learn about the culture of the native Americans who were there many years ago as well as the lives of the early settlers. The area, with it's mountains and rivers is unique.

make sure and take your time here please start downstairs and go up... the First Nations part of the museum is great!!!!!! it may break your heart but still worth the time........
