It was a great fun short train ride. Lots of Halloween decorations. The kids loved it ! We had the family caboose 308...highly recommend it for a family group of 8-10. Well worth the cost. All the staff were friendly and helpful.

We took our son for the first time to ride the spooky train. He had a blast. The train ride was fun, seeing the old train cars was fun. The decorations were great.
There even was a good food truck there. Face painting, a gift shop, being able to ask about all the old train cars was cool.
All the staff are volunteers and are very friendly and helpful. They do several different themed rides a year. Plus it's open from April to December . You can have birthday parties there.
We will be going back.

Although the stated policy was that masks must be worn on the train, nearly half the people on the train were not wearing masks. I asked an employee if the policy could be enforced, and he stated no. Fine for those who are fully immunized. For those with kids less than 5 who concerned about COVID, be advised that there will be people in close proximity to you on the train who are coughing and not wearing masks, and that there will be no enforcement of the mask policy.

My husband and I booked the caboose on a Wednesday with our 3 year old grandson. We thought more could come, but it ended up just being the three of us. The train is great and the old caboose is exactly what we expected. I would have given 5 stars if we were given ear protection with our tickets. The first half of the ride was absolutely awesome. The last half scared our grandson to death and our efforts to comfort him meant we couldn’t cover our own ears against the engine horn.

It was nice to have a ride through the pine trees. The smell was amazing, and the ride was relaxing. Would be good for if you have small kids

Our 3 year ofd grandson loves trains, he has been on the train from Raleigh to Durham, Wilson Train Station to watch the trains come through. New Hope does a great job ( run by volunteers) , just outside Apex not only a train ride which takes about 1 hour, but model trains set up outdoors - yes Thomas the tank engine is there also! Everyone is very friendly, parking free and easy. The Halloween theme was fun , not too scary for a 3 year old ,train ride just long enough, food truck if you want something to eat or drink , plenty of opportunities for that selfie!

OK, before y’all ask, I am not a “railfan,” but I do like all things that move, roll, fly or float, burn fuel, make noise or smoke. One day while driving in the area, I noticed a tank car sitting at a railroad crossing with a sign on it advertising the “Triangle Train,” so my curiosity prompted me to go look at their website. That’s when I found that you can “Operate-A-Loco,” so I bought a ticket for an upcoming Saturday, and made plans to brig my wife and granddaughter. When you get there, the engineer-instructor takes you (and your two guests) up into the cab of a mid-century GE 45-ton switcher, a double-ended center-cab rig powered by two Cummins 672 diesels. You learn about signaling, using the throttle and brake—and horn, and general railroad safety as you pilot 90,000 pounds of heavy metal down an old track in the woods that used to be part of the Durham & South Carolina Railroad, and carried tobacco, timber and other products up to Durham before Jordan Lake was built, starting in 1906. The railway has several of this style of locomotive including one still wearing the livery of nearby Seymour Johnson Air Force Base where it used to serve (mine, Engine No. 399, came from Camp Lejeune—semper fi!) plus a steam locomotive that’s currently disassembled getting work done and expected to go back into service in 2020.
You must be 18 years old and have a driver’s license to drive the loco, and closed toe shoes are required. If this level of involvement is too much for you, you can opt to take a leisurely train ride scheduled on different days in an excursion train consisting of one of these engines, up to four open-air cars, and a caboose (which were not typically used on passenger trains and now are not used at all in modern railroading operations) traveling both ways over the same route. They also run special Halloween and Santa trains.
The railyard is a museum displaying a number of different examples of railroad power, rolling stock and other equipment for you to look at. The gift shop is a restored mail car. There is also an outdoor “garden railway” (G-gauge model railroad layout), but it wasn’t operating at the time of our visit.
This is a 100% volunteer-operated non-profit organization with no paid staff, rather than a commercial enterprise. Accordingly, it has limited hours of operation, and you need to check the website for their schedule (they do run whatever is scheduled rain or shine). There’s no snack bar or hot dog stand, although they do schedule several “Brew & Choo” events during the year, with beer and food trucks participating; that’s the only food & beverage service you’ll find here. If you’re looking for a cute little miniature park train, go to Pullen Park; if you want to ride in real railroad history, this is the place.

We visited with some out-of-town guests who had young children. When you pull into the parking area they have someone to guide you where to park. From there, go to the ticket booth and pick up your tickets. It is recommended that you order online early because there are not many train rides and they fill up quickly. Arrive about a half hour early, and visit the model train yard. There are six trains operating continuously while they are open with a conductor who explains the operation. They also had a young tour guide/volunteer who described the history of the railroad and the various cars they have in use and in stages of restoration. There is a lot of history on this line and how the community was built around it.
Cross the foot bridge to the active line and get ready to board one of the several open passenger cars. The volunteer will punch your ticket after the train begins and interacts with each guest answering questions and describing the line. The train goes a little more than a mile and then returns while a narrator explains more about the railroad. The PA system is not very good, so it was hard to actually hear.
Once you return there are other cars with volunteers to explain the operation. Visit an actual caboose, a US mail car, and their history display/gift shop car. There are other displays and boards to read more about the history.
Plan on 1 to 2 hours, bring your camera, and enjoy!

Had a nice time looking at large outside model trains. Enjoyed hopping aboard some old train cars in the yard. Great time on our 45 minute train ride.
