There are as many stories in this cemetery as there are stones. We had a 1.5 hour tour and we could easily have listened twice as long to Robin Simonton tell fascinating tale after tale. Although some people might think it odd to tour a cemetery, it is one of the best ways to get to know a place & the people who live/lived there. This is where Jesse Helms is buried, along w/Elizabeth & Wade Edwards (wife & son of former Senator John Edwards), victims of the 1918-19 flu epidemic, with a confederate and a Hebrew section. The cemetery was segregated until 1986. You can take an Art & Symbolism tour and a unique tour of prominent (and infamous) women in Raleigh. We took a picnic lunch and were glad to spend a whole afternoon there. The cemetery operates as a non-profit & only asks for a donation of your own choosing. Also, lovely garden grounds to walk through.

I love going to old cemeteries and this one did not disappoint. The Confederate Soldier section was particularly interesting and there are lots of old graves in the other sections as well. Well worth the time.

We decided to take a drive through the cemetery with some free time before dinner.

It’s old, well maintained, and quiet. As we entered we saw a few signs “gates close at 5 pm”. We made our way back to the gate by 5 pm and on our phones and it was legit locked and closed with us inside! Some sort of timer.

We called a few numbers on the gate and they gave us a code to get out. It was a Friday night so we had no idea if we were going to be stuck there for awhile.

That place means business!

Totally worth the drive or stroll. Just get out before 5 pm!

A few times over the years I have visited here just for the historical value. There are thousands of grave sites that are hundreds of years old. It is an eye opener to know all these people lived, breathed, in the Raleigh area hundreds of years ago.

We walked along the perimeter, as the place was closed due to COVID-19. The cemetery is just gorgeous with some beautiful head stones. A definite must do while in Raleigh.

This is a must in Raleigh! The grounds are expansive and quiet and well maintained with many a neat stone to see. The craftsmanship alone is worth the trip, regardless of the urban legends. We spent far more time here than planned.

As an avid cemetery lover I can say this place did not disappoint. It is really large, took me about 3 hours and I don’t think I have been everywhere. The place is about a 150 years old, so the graves don’t look ancient, most of them are well kept. It is still in use. I have been to quite a few cemeteries in the United States, this one is one of the best, hands down.

As an avid cemetery lover, Oakwood is by far one of the best cemeteries I've visited! The atmosphere is peaceful and relaxing, and it is very well maintained and taken care of! Didn't have enough time to check out the whole cemetery, but I'm looking forward to coming back again in the future!
