Beautiful area to drive through and/or hike to see wildlife. The dunes are gorgeous. It was unfortunately very windy and cold when I was there so was not able to hike but will definitely go back in warmer weather.

This is a wonderful beach spot away from all the hustle and bustle, making for a very quiet and relaxing situation. There is free parking in the visitors lot but it's limited in quantity though we saw some folks parked on the side of the road. The visitor center has regular flushing bathrooms though no sinks. There's no place nearby to get food so if you're spending time here, I would recommend bringing snacks/a picnic/etc.

Very nice visitor center with gift shop on one side and observation area with telescopes on the other. Cool set up. The volunteers are happy to tell you what wildlife can be seen with the telescopes.

Good place to visit. Although we did not see a lot of wildlife the turtle pond was interesting and the walk to the observation tower is nice. There is a long walk through the refuge which we didn't take and the dunes are right across the road. The welcome center has a lot of helpful info. Make sure you bring water.

We had some crazy winds and weather but still a very cool place to visit. Its kind of the OBX away from the crazy parts and just very relaxing. Not too much wildlife at all to see per the weather but then again, no bugs either! The beaches are gorgeous and the water is ROUGH. The winds were probably close to 45 mph this day but it made the ocean even more memorable. Check it out!

First and foremost, bring your bug spray!! We had bug spray on and still have bug bites even through our clothing! The first little pond is loaded with turtles which was so fun to watch! To get to the pond you have to cross some sand which would not work for a stroller or wheelchair. We carried the stroller over and then the rest is stroller friendly. The walk to the elevated lookout was scenic and there were birds but it was hot and buggy. The people working inside the shop were so friendly and informative. Next time I'd make a quick stop to see the turtles and then leave.

This past Sunday was a beautiful sunny day with low wind, so my husband and I headed to Pea Island. We first stopped at the end of the Basnight Bridge - where you can still walk on a part of the former Bonner Bridge. We walked around the area a little, following the trails toward the ocean and then headed down the road to the Pea Island Visitors Center. This is an area with a trail that takes you around the Sound side where you can view the Tundra Swans and Snow Geese that have migrated to the area for the winter. It's a lovely, lovely walk and a great place to take photos. The Visitors Center has some displays of local wildlife as well as a wonderful gift shop that sells the work of many local artists - jewelry, cards, art work and other items. This is a don't miss!

This trail is .6 miles with an endpoint. Easy walk through wetlands on the sound side teeming with many kinds of birds. There's a turtle pond also, but the turtles weren't active while we were there. There are platforms with binoculars all along the trail. Nice way to spend an hour.
Just up the road toward the bridge is another part of the preserve on the oceanside. You can take a walk to the beach.
Definitely worth checking out.

Pea Island is birders paradise. In the winter months thousands of waterfowl show up to spend time on the ponds. Tundra swans, white pelicans, Ibis, egrets and about every duck species you can think of. The visitor center is open everyday from 9 am to 4 pm. Helpful volunteers will assist you with bid id's. Great gifts in the shop too.

Beautiful beach. Best place for sunset pictures. Easy trail to wooden lookout. Saw lots of turtles, birds, and jumping fish. Bring BUG spray.

You will have to find your direction from South Carolina on the internet. Once you get to Nags Head, NC follow Hwy 12 to Pea Island. Nice Visitors Center and gift shop. They have walking paths on sound side, bird tours and volunteers are very helpful. You can walk across Hwy 12 to the beach from the Visitors center. On a good morning you can find shells. There are other beach accesses along hwy 12 coming from Nags Head. No restaurants in Pea Island. Must pic nic or find restaurants before leaving Nags Head or continue to Hatteras & look for restaurants on the way. Atlantic Coast Cafe is in Rodanthe. There are a few other restaurants, but I’ve been to Atlantic. Beware of off season lots of places close.

I think leetl319 has Pea Island, which has no wolves or bears, with Alligator Refuge over on Roanoke Island, which indeed does have red wolves and black bears.

Pea Island is a wildlife refuge and it has beach access across the street. Theres no lodging,camping,or dinning within 15-20 minutes. They do sell snacks and refreshments in the gift shop though. you can keep the shells when you go to the beach across the street. Fishing is permitting at the ocean as well with a NC fishing license. Basically I'd pack a picnic and stay all day walking. They also have clean restrooms.

You can stay at Rodanthe where there are restaurants, etc. many people make this a day trip and stay in the Nage Head area or in one of the other villages on Hatteras Island.
We prefer Hatteras and stayed there on our boat for about twenty years.
Picking up shells is a favorite pastime. If you go, you might want to try clamming. Several places offer this in Hatteras village; you rent a boat with guide and go into Pamlica Sound to clam.

looking for some good biking as well as hiking......am a photographer.....how many miles of
trails on Pea Island and can you ride bikes there?? Coming last week of August, will there
