We rented six adult bikes from Rivergirl Fishing to ride the 11 miles one -way rail trail. Beware their bikes are not as described on the website. Website states they have “new” Trek bikes. Not one was a Trek and they were far from new or good condition. Bikes are rusted, walked one back for a flat tire (tube literally dry rotted), the seat on the replacement bike wouldn’t lock in place and twice had to stop to set the chain back on two separate bikes. No changing gears or the chain would come off. Really just junk.
As far as the trail , beware this is a paved ,narrow and curvy road with blind spots and residential traffic. Some of the cars were not so “mountain” friendly as they passed you. While the scenery is pretty the navigating traffic on a narrow road doesn’t make for a fun rail trail experience.
The staff was friendly enough however place is pretty tacky and dirty. There is also no indoor facilities to use.
We had reservations for tubing in the afternoon but cancelled. Water level about 10 inches so something you should check prior to going.
Bottom line I wouldn’t waste my money on bikes, $30 per bike.

If looking for an outfitter in the High Country, look no further than RiverGirl Fishing Company. This outfitter hit my radar after seeing them on a PBS program highlighting travel in NC. I finally had the opportunity to check them out when looking for a tubing trip. The reservation process was simple and confirmation emails were sent immediately. RiverGirl is a fun, funky outfitter staffed by friendly, knowledgeable employees. The mountain setting was ideal on a hot July day! At the end of a wonderful day we wanted to purchase some of their great t-shirts. I laid my credit card on the counter when I found out they couldn't accept credit cards, finished my transaction via Venmo, and walked away. After returning to Boone I received a call from Renata letting me know about my left behind card. She was more than willing to meet me in Boone and return the card. Instead, I asked for the card to be cut up. Right after that I received a picture via text of the cut-up card! I cannot express my thanks enough to Renata for all of her effort and integrity. Please give this outfitter your business, you will not be disappointed!

I can't say enough great things about River Girl. We booked 2 tubing appointments during our vacation. We needed only a ride because we had our own tubes. I got several calls from River Girl, confirming our reservation and number in our party (just 2) and on the first day we tubed, we underestimated how long it would take us to get to Todd and were going to be about 5 minutes late. They were gracious and laid-back about it and even added air to our tubes when we arrived. We rode in both Old Blue and the yellow van. Both are groovy! Our first day tubing included a funny but informative spiel about safety and river etiquette. The river was calm and blissfully uncrowded both days, and we tubed for almost 3 hours. When we exited the river, the walk back was short and pleasant. No one should complain about it. Everyone was polite. They were shuttling tubers and kayakers. The 2nd day didn't include the spiel, but we got a fascinating "history lesson" about Todd from our driver as we went, pointing out things of interest and really cool facts about the small "town." It made the visit more enjoyable. I love the hip vibe of River Girl -- nestled among abandoned railcars and situated next to a very accommodating church that let us cut through their property on the short walk back to our car. It's not a fancy place but it feels fun and comfortable and welcoming. A huge, charming plus was all the animals on the property -- Pepper the potbellied pig, geese, and chickens, and probably more that I didn't see! It's such a fun, helpful group of folks who work there. They'll do anything they can to make your trip fun and safe. Everyone seems to love working there and meeting customers. I'll definitely tube with River Girl again and again when I'm in the area.

We took the beginner Fly Fishing course with Nick - overall the information was great and the Nick was super informative especially on the native bug life and how to read it to improve your fishing.
The RiverGirl facility is a bit of a hot mess - lots of kids running around, old train cars, farm animals, and stuff everywhere - while the services we had were great if you drove up on this place you might keep going.
The one thing I would note on this course is we spent about 2 hours talking fishing, 30 minutes practicing casting, and maybe 30 minutes on the river (one rod between 4 people) - my one suggestion would be to get on the water faster and also, maybe head up to the more open part of the river where casting for beginners would be easier - Nick had to spend a bit of time retrieving our fly from the overhanging trees.

The exterior of the place is a HOT mess... then you meet the "girls" and it doesn't matter. They are so caring and truly just want you to have the best trip down the river! We were here in October - two couples, two kayaks for the three hour tour and we had a wonderful, beautiful time. It is hard to explain the calming journey down the river where you will laugh at rocks you may get stuck on, or aww over the animals that call the river home like blue heron and eagle or osprey, or simply enjoy the peaceful quiet of the river. Out day was wonderful and we would love to do this again!

We had a wonderful experience with RiverGirl! We wanted to both rent a kayak and bring one of our own, which they easily accommodated on short notice. The actual building was being renovated, however there was a welcome tent set up outside to quickly check us in. Minutes later, we were driven up to our drop off point by a very nice young man, who helped us get going in the water. We did the three-hour float, and I'd highly recommend it! The water was calm, slow moving, and varied in depth (the most at eight feet, I think). There were some class 1 rapids along the way, though I'd hardly call them that. It was fun in a kayak- I imagine it would be even better in a tube! To note, there is a very low wooden bridge at one spot, which you basically have to limbo under... so be prepared to lay down if you're in a kayak. I'm a larger gal and it was not too bad... a car even drove over it while my husband was floating under- very trippy but also kinda fun to laugh about. The river is fine for any level kayaker- super easy float.
There's a short walk from the stopping point back to the building, but we were able to leave our boats on the shore for the staff to pick up for us. While we waited for our kayak to be returned, we were able to enjoy the animals roaming on the property- a few friendly dogs, a pig, some ducks, and a rooster. There were changing tents set up, but we didn't use them. Of note, the tubes also looked to be high quality and roomy, but we didn't use them.
Overall, the staff was very friendly, accommodating, and helpful, and the river is relaxing and beautiful. I'd highly recommend visiting RiverGirls!

Family of 5, rented bikes. Our kids were teens so the Route was not an issue. If your kids are smaller or not use to riding on a road, the route could be tricky. There are some spots where there is significant traffic. For the most part cars were respectful of bicycles. The staff at RiverGirl were friendly. I would suggest improving you parking area. Overall, nice experience.

Excellent job with COVID-19 precautions. Easy to make reservation for our group of 9 people. A cooler tube enabled to bring some refreshments. All of our smiling faces were greeted by the River Girl herself at the finish after three fun hours of tubing.

RiverGirl game my family a great time on and near the river during a recent visit. They are taking COVID- related sanitation seriously. All staff wear masks and take special care to sanitize the equipment between guests. They have excellent customer service as well. After our first adventure with them (biking and tubing), Kelly provided her cell phone number so we could more easily book our kayaking trip later in the week. They were knowledgeable about which boats would be best for our family gave suggestions on how to safely bring out dogs (novice kayakers) down the river, too. While waiting for our car at their base, we hung out with their pig, ducks, and chickens (ask about how Curry got her name). After our trip, Ranata texted to ensure that a cooler that was left behind was not ours.
