Interesting history of the home and the lifestyle of wealthy whites pre-civil war. Not a lot of furnishings but good narratives of the people and the home. We did the self-guided tour. There’s a historian to ask questions of-who was very nice

Tour was very informative. I think our tour guide was Hunter, not for sure if thats right, and was very knowledgeable. The prison area outside was interesting to see. Gardens onsite were beautiful.

We were dissappointed in this house. There was hardly any original furniture. The explanation: the family took whatever they wanted. The bedrooms were decorsted with artwork from a local painter and were uninspiring. Granted we did the self guided tour. But we overheard a little of the last tour and it was still a dud of a tour. Skip this one.

A fascinating look at life in the early 1800's. You can go on a self guided tour or have a tour guide. You can walk through the slave quarters and the mansion. So much history that we should never forget. The architecture and the decor was amazing considering the time in which it was built.

We were disappointed with our guided tour. We were expecting to hear a historical tour of the mansion and the role of the Bellamy family in the the society and the economy of Wilmington. We got none of that. We did learn the architect and builder came from northern cities and the Bellamy family were un-Reconstructed Rebels. Our tour guide (whose name I don’t remember) did not really tell us anything of interest. We didn’t learn that Dr. John Bellamy was the largest slave holder in North Carolina (we researched later). Our guide pointed out the quarters of the enslaved house servants, but he waved his hand and said, “but I don’t want to waste any time talking about that right now.” The tour is supposed to take 1 1/2 hours, we left after 65 minutes - and 10 of those minutes were spent trying to link people headsets to the guides microphone. The guide had a flippant approach to his dialogue that was inappropriate for what was supposed to be a historical tour. Our guide didn’t offer his personal perspective on slavery, the Civil War and reconstruction, he chose to avoid talking about those topics, and the Bellamy family role in those events, other than to offer tidbits of trivia.
The tour could have been better. There was a docent in the mansion who provided some interesting anecdotes about the family and the house but, sadly, she was not our guide.

Having a guided tour was best way to get the full information on the tour of the mansion. So much history goes into the tour. Bill gave us the best tour and we were all in awe of the history.

recently i had visited Bellamy mansion on two separate tours. On was at Christmas time with all its finery and holiday traditions. the second tour was when a friend from NJ visited and we got the official guided tour. The gentleman was well versed in history of the Mansion and its family through the ages and also had a wealth of historical stories and knowledge of the area and people who were attached in some way to the mansion in their youth like Pres Wilson or the craftsman like the Black plaster craftsman who joined the Union arm and was later lauded for his work in a New England town. I highly recommend this place as it is not just a house but is woven into the fabric and life of the area. I encourage people to support the mansion and the historical society tat supports it.

Our tour guide was wonderful and the tour was about two hours but offered great stories and insights to Wilmington during the Civil War era.

I don't remember what the cost of a senior ticket is. You're asking a senior who can't remember.
I do remember that the house is not air conditioned. It is worth being warm just to see it and hear about the family that lived there!

I believe you can purchase the tickets at the mansion on the day of your tour. But the downtown hotels and other venues always seem to be offering discount tickets, so you can beat the at the door price if you shop a round a bit.

Adults tickets are indeed $12.00. The package deals are good to explore as well.
I do wish that some of the places in town would come up with a family ticket -- and when teens are with a parent(s) that they might get a reduced rate, but that is a whole different issue.

Due to the historical nature of the structure, the mansion itself is not wheelchair accessible. However, we do offer a complimentary 30 minute video tour of the entire site shown in our handicapped accessible Carriage House. We hope you'll visit!
