Was invited to the "CAM" to celebrate my birthday. I thought we were just taking in some of the art exhibits. I did not know that we were not only appreciating art - but also having Brunch. The Museum has 3 staging areas, the Cafe and a small gift area. There are also outdoor seating areas that I was told often showcase live music.
It was a nice way to spend my birthday. It's not the MOMA but it's a lovely small forum for art appreciation.

The Brunch was lovely - the menu was small but contained interesting selections. Beer, Wine and Mimosas/Bloody Mary's were also available.
The Food was plated well and very well prepared.
It was raining on our visit so we did not have an opportunity to explore the grounds. I did notice a military status on the grounds which I researched and learned was the Civil War site of the Battle of Forks Road fought on February 20, 1865.
I enjoyed my visit so much - I decided to take a membership and look forward to the upcoming exhibits.

Gestapo at the door forcing you to show papers for entrance. Highly discriminated against place. This place is basically an exercise of how high can I put myself on a pedestal if you sound out every syllable of the word theater this is your place. You would be better off to find local artist to enjoy their work.

Small fine art museum. Seems like 3 indoor exhibit areas and some outdoor space. About an hour to see everything, maybe a little longer if you want to walk the trails outside. Reasonably priced - children under 19 admitted free, free parking. Very small place.

The staff was very friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable about the exhibits. It seemed like they enjoyed begin a part of the museum.

When we were there the exhibits were: classical plaster casts or recreations, Safe Places by Robert Johnson, and A House of One Room by Elizabeth Bradford, and there was also an area with a mixture of pieces from various artists in their collection.

Our favorites were some pieces in the mixture area (I didn't get the artists' names!), many of the Bradford pieces, and the intriguing cardboard dancers. Fun seating sculptures out front.

Covid notes: Staff are masked, optional for guests, cafe is closed.

There are three exhibit rooms. I got lucky as there were shows by 3 amazing artists when I went. There is plenty of space to spread out (covid times) and a small gift shop. It is one of the smaller art museums so it doesn’t take long to go through.

Sad really. There were works of perhaps twenty artists total on display, many just a single piece. At least half of the building is taken up with gift shop, cafe, restrooms, offices and classroom. There were exactly 3 curated exhibits when I visited: 1) a meager dozen prints from a local private collection 2) several rooms replete with hundreds of sketches and finished works of one artist depicting images from all 41 NC state parks 3) a very large 20'X40' room with ONE bust, a bronze cast of Abraham Lincoln's face, some ancillary magazine covers, a tedious film loop and 2 benches. Despite lingering over every piece in the museum, reading every placard and strolling the grounds, I couldn't fill a full hour. It was nothing but depressing to see so few (mediocre) art pieces, poorly curated (spelling and grammar errors abound) in mostly empty space. If you are an art lover, do not consider visiting. If you are a casual activity seeker, avoid at all costs (which, by the way is a totally undeserved $10 charge). Sad.

If you have any interest in art, be sure to visit the CAM. The current shows--Noguchi sculpture and furniture, and "The Eye Learns" -are terrific. The latter is the first showing of a large collection of prints that was recently donated to the museum. It includes work by Frankenthaler, Calder, Rauschenberg and many, many more. The staff was especially welcoming and helpful, and the building is bright and well-suited to show off the art.

We went for dinner on Thursday night, the only night they serve dinner. The service was excellent but we only stayed for glass of wine and appetizer. They had a guy playing guitar and singing however it was so loud you could not have a conversation. Actually it was ridiculous how loud it was especially given the space. For sure we will never return.

I love this museum! We are so fortunate to have it in a town as small as Wilmington. They always have some wonderful exhibits, and the print exhibit going on now is excellent.
