Oh dear! The Trust cuts have badly affected this one time gem. The tea rooms are closed and there is no info about when they might open again.
The grounds are in a very poor state of disrepair and neglect. The 1300 job cuts are really biting.. We are lifetime NT members and usually visit this house and gardens four times a year but this will be our last visit for a long time I'm afraid.
Grass not tended or weeded, the flower beds are bare with some areas just covered by tarpaulin, the pond is covered in weed - I could go on......
The gardener told us it's been downgraded due to lack of visitors.
The house is now only by advance booking at certain times.
WHY? Pubs/clubs/sporting venues are now allowing free movement so why not this place? Shame

Hello JCS12, Thank you for taking the time to leave your review of your visit to Peckover. I must say that i'm a little confused by your review though, as it is most out of kilter with all our previous feedback and visitor comments we receive in person. I'll go through some of the points: Tea Room - This is now being used as a community space for people living with dementia and their carers - a worthy use I hope you will agree? We are striving to offer refreshments again from early July, but it won't be on the scale that you have previously experienced. The change of use is advertised on our website, so visitors can plan their day in advance and bring a picnic/takeaway into the garden to enjoy. Garden - I have talked with our garden team and they cannot recall the conversation you mention above. The grass is cut weekly and we have a team of volunteers which help the staff team care for the garden on a daily basis. The area covered with matting is our Mingled Border, which is being redesigned and replanted. The covering needs to be down for at least a year, to kill off all the weeds. The design and reason behind the project is all explained on an information board by the border in question - sorry you missed this. 'Neglect' and 'disrepair' are words I have never heard in conjunction with the garden at Peckover, so would be keen to talk through this a bit more with you, to understand how you feel our garden care and maintenance could be improved. Thank you Ben Rickett Property Operations Manager 01945 582871

A gem of a property with a fascinating history and lovely gardens. Our knowledgeable and engaging tour guide John did a great job of bringing the history alive, including that of the talented Quaker Peckover family.

Very interesting visit to the garden and house, the guided tour of the house is excellent, John and Patricia-Anne are very knowledgeable and interesting. Parking is free just behind the house in Chapel Street car park.

Have a guided talk. Our guide ,John Carr , supported by Tricia, was a mine of information on the family and the history of this house that is a capsule of the early 17th century. Very relaxing house and superb gardens. Whenever you go there is always something new to see.

We visited Wisbech specifically to visit this property and were not disappointed. Guides were excellent and very knowledgeable. Would definitely recommend. The library was fascinating.

A real gem in the heart of Wisbech, such a varied history throughout the past 250 years. The gardens are a wonderful retreat in the middle of a town, and so quiet considering a major road is so near. Informative Guide took us through the ages and occupants - really interesting.

The house isn’t particularly large but, due to the excellent guided tour we experienced of no more than 12 people, our tour lasted almost an hour.
The garden is very pretty but doesn’t take more than 15 minutes to walk around.
You have to book to visit. Frustratingly, the actual tour takes place 30 minutes after the time on your ticket. You are advised to tour the garden first. As most people arrive at least 5 minutes early for a guided tour, that is quite a lot of time to fill. Several people expressed frustration at this. Fortunately, it wasn’t raining.
There is no car park but parking is free in the town.

The shame about Peckover House is the fact that it isn't open year round and the cafe isn't either as it's a great place to sit in and the food is lovely.

Charming house made special with a guided tour (about 1 hr 15 minutes), There are very limited places for the tour so book ahead at the earliest chance. Also, as a result of getting the opening times wrong we arrived too early and so were very lucky with parking after struggling to find it, even with satnav assistance. Signposting in Wisbech wasn't brilliant.

I guess if we had only done an unguided tour we would have got round quite quickly in the limited rooms open and have had far less information.

I had never been to Wisbech before and the first thing to strike me, upon arrival at Peckover house, was how unusual and attractive the riverside area of the town is. Both banks are lined with elegant townhouses of varied design, dating from the time when Wisbech was a prosperous inland port.
Amongst these townhouses is Peckover House - a relatively plain but handsome Georgian edifice, its front dominated by a massive wisteria.
Of course, covid precludes a visit to the house itself but the garden is open. Not a vast garden by National Trust standards, but a fair size for a town-centre property. It is pretty, varied and charming - split into various compartments.
In virus-free times, it would be possible to enter the glass houses and the large barn to be found in various corners of the property.
Planting is very appealing and there are some beautiful and impressive mature trees in the grounds.
My enjoyable stroll around took me well under an hour and I wished I'd brought a picnic and a book, to give me an excuse to linger longer in this tranquil spot.
One to return to.
