Well laid out and informative museum with helpful staff. Cafe area was well-designed and roomy. Brought to life a part of social and industrial history of which we had almost no knowledge.

Very friendly staff. Interesting displays and interactive exhibits, although unfortunately several were out of action. Good to wander around and imagine how it used to be. There is cafe with homemade cakes and children's playground. These can actually be accessed separately to the museum. There is also a butterfly garden and access to walks. Dogs are allowed in the outside area, but not in the museum itself. Museum is reasonably costed at £6.60 per adult. Needs better marketing, as I have passed by many times and wish now I had gone earlier, when my children were young, as it would have been a very pleasant morning or afternoon.

Really enjoyed this interesting and well laid out museum. The information boards and displays were really informative. You can wander round at your leisure which gives you plenty of time to read and review. On display are artefacts from the time which gives a real sense of the production of the salt. It is fantastic that this history has been preserved and long may it have a place in Northwich.
However, it was disappointing that many of the interactive facilities were 'waiting for an engineer' to get them fixed. Please hurry and get them fixed as it is spoiling the experience.
Lovely cafe, friendly staff, clean toilets and facilities. Don't forget to take a walk round the butterfly garden (especially once the flowers start to bloom).

A retired couple, we visited the Lion Salt Works whilst caravanning nearby. The staff are friendly and helpful, the museum is well presented and interesting to visit. We spent a couple of hours wandering around the exhibits, learning a lot about salt production in this area. We would recommend a visit if you are in the area and would have given a 5 star rating, but quite a lot of the interactive displays were out of order and awaiting repair during our visit. Hopefully these will be repaired in the near future, before the main holiday season.

Afternoon at Lion Salt Works.
Will never take salt for granted after showing how it is produced.
A small excellent museum.
Interesting, well organised place.
The Ladies in the cafe were very friendly and service was brilliant

Nearly all of us use salt to some degree on a daily basis but until we went to the Lion Salt Works we had no idea how awful the conditions must have been for those who retrieved this product from natural sources and turned it into the commodity we see in shops. The process was amazingly simple in some respects but the toll it must have taken on the people who worked in the industry is unimaginable. Most remarkable is that the company didn't close until the 1970's or 80's. The works and the surrounding infrastructure are very well presented - so glad that it wasn't all torn down and turned into a housing estate. It is a real insight into the world of manufacturing of a substance we have been using for thousands of years but one which we all take for granted.

Great museum. Very helpful staff and the museum and exhibits were of a very high standard. If you want to learn about the salt industry and how it dominated this area of the UK, this is a great place to start. But is also lovely just to wander around the exhibits.

We were on our way back from a weekend near Chester and as I'd seen the signs for this museum on several previous occasions, I suggested we called in.
We had just missed the time for the guided tour so did it on our own. There were several interactive displays plus plenty of information boards. Just the right amount of information to keep us interested but not too much for us to switch off. The history of the salt works was fascinating and every credit to the local council to turn the site into a museum once the actual salt works closed in the late 1980s. I do remember as a child seeing the Lion salt little tubs in my mother's store cupboard.
The only slight criticism I would make is that neither of the two members of staff we dealt with (on arrival and before looking in the shop) were less than motivated and seemed to have no enthusiasm for their museum whatsoever.
After we'd been around the museum, we went for a short walk down to one of the flashes where the salt had once been collected. This had been beautifully transformed into a lake and was so attractive to the local wildlife. The canal nearby also would have had some interesting walks but we needed to be on our way back to the motorway.

They have scooters but you would not get the best out of this site as it's really an experiential exhibit. Narrow passages, steep stairs, awkward corners etc. You would get something out of it, but you would miss an awful lot.
