I visited Spike Island today (I have done regularly over the past few years but not so much recently). I enjoyed the walks, views fresh air and wildlife, I was deeply saddened to see that the boating maring/lock has been allowed to dry up and is not longer in use (it seems). A local resident advised that this was a decision taken by Widnes/Halton Council. It was distressing to see shoals of fish struggling to breathe/swim in the remaining muddy water especially in the baking heat and lack of shade. You would think that in the 21st century, councils would have a more considerate and environmentally aware approach to draining the lake rather that just simply draining the water and leaving the fish to suffocate. I have tried to email the council to report my dismay, however, sadly (unsurprisingly) the site is down. I imagine the geese, birds and other wildlife ever present at the lake will also be left to find an alternative habitat - again without any consideration. Once all the wildlife is dead and we don't have to watch them suffering; I'm sure Spike Island will become, once again, a pleasant walk.

Absolutely beautiful place! Great place to go to get fresh air- especially so after lockdown! Beautiful birds as well and the canal!

Nice place to visit. Boats on the canal leading to River Mersey. Plenty of wildlife. Nice cafe aswell for food & a hot cuppa !

Great place with loads of history and spectacular views, just need to replace the bridge over the canal to release it's full potential

A lovely local, canal side walking area. The end of the old St Helens canal, at the edge of the River Mersey. Plenty waterfowl, plenty of friendly swans in particular, that enjoy being fed. A local mooring location for many different types of boats, marooned on the old canal system, which now goes under the new Mersey Gateway road bridge. Giving walkers and cyclists miles of canalside walks, with great views across the Mersey to the Cheshire side of the river.

It is a nice park, one of my fave places. But it definitely isn't a nature reserve and isn't managed by the council as a nature reserve. Feeding the swans is fun but the nature reserve is called Widnes Warth - nearby but not here.

I don't see why not. it's more of canal/river. You'd just need to be really careful because there's lots of big swans & geese
