We really struggled to find the tunnel entrance from the Sainsburys end. There are no signs. But it's off station road opposite the entrance to Sainsburys carpark. The Tunnel Cafe is actually on top of the tunnel in Church Street. A quirky attraction and start of a cycleway/trail to Tissington.

A really interesting walk we started from the Sainsburys end and its all flat and level.
Lots of birds and wildlife along the way.
Did not do the full walk but enjoyed the short distance we went.

Okay, it’s only a tunnel, but it was a gem of a find on a damp miserable day with little to do in Ashbourne. We’d ventured out on our new EBikes. Only this and St Giles church came up as places of interest. The fact that there are no direction signs and it doesn’t appear on Google Maps just makes it more interesting. More could be made of this heritage landmark, but worth finding if you can!

A lovely tunnel situated by the car park at the beginning/ end of the Tissington trail, an old disused rail track which has been turned into a great cycle/ walkway.
The tunnel is a short cut back into the pretty town of Ashbourne.
More of a photo opportunity really.

Interesting spot to visit on the Tissington trail. A step back in time. Wear a jacket it s a bit chilly inside

Arrived to collect my hire bike off Mapleton Road end.
Cycled along the old railway line - now called the Tissington Trail - finishing under the Ashbourne Tunnel.
Enjoyed a well deserved ice cream and a coffee.
Great for a few photos and music dutifully being played by a verbally scented man on a drum...
Highly recommended

L’imbocco del tunnel e’ a pochi passi dal Leisure Centre e segna l’inizio del bel Tissington Trail.

Enjoyable to walk through and just about as you get half way the sound installation kicks in which is enjoyable.

This is a great walk. The whole trail is 24 miles long. From Ashbourne to Derby. But you can do as much or as little as you like. If you park by the tunnel it's a short walk into town. And an easy walk the other way on the trail, with toilets and a cafe about 100 yards from the car park.

Hi, could anyone tell me if the Tissington trail is suitable for walking dogs on leads? Or is the route really crowded by cyclists. We are thinking of visiting the area in early June.

I find little pleasure in walking my dog on the trail. The cyclists do not to have bells.They seem to assume that they have precedence over pedestrians and dogs. It’s often crowded with children. They are of course noisy and unpredictable but they have every right to be so and it’s great that they are there. They also have to scatter when the Lycra’s descend.
