Really awful and I don’t understand why it is has such a high star rating. It’s £11 per person to go in and there’s just a couple of information boards with the history as you go in and that’s it. After that , it’s a steep climb up with stairs with no hand rail, despite the drop and narrow path. It’s a ruin and not a very exciting one. The city I’m from has several defence towers around it, which are ruins and anyone can look at for free. We also have a large castle of the similar age, which is a museum and art gallery with cafe, dungeons tours. It’s also much cheaper to go in!
Lovely views but there are lots of lovely views in this part of the country that you can see for free.

Having read previous reviews, I was a little worried about managing the steep approach with two dogs in tow. It was absolutely fine, plenty of seats and felt perfectly safe. The views from the top are amazing and worth the climb, looking down into Cave Dale on one side and across to Mam Tor on the other. The guide at the top was friendly.

Worth a visit for the fantastic views but castle is a ruin so not that much to see. Simple but thoroughly enjoyable treasure trail for young boys kept them occupied. Staff were very welcoming and info boards good

The castle was never big, so there's not much to see other than the ruined keep. However, the location is really impressive, with a commanding view from the top over the valley & towards Mam Tor. On the far side it stands on a cliff above Cave Dale and it is worth walking into the dale to see it from the same angle that Turner painted.

The castle is located at the top of a hill, with a perilous walk up an exceedingly steep footpath. Part of the path has a safety handrail, however
higher up the slope there is no rail at all, and the path is on the side of a very steep hill. Walking up to the castle is not for those with mobility issues or a fear of heights! For the brave souls who reach the top the castle ruins are interesting and the views are magnificent. The entrance fee is not small, and would be better justified if English Heritage were to install a safety handrail along the whole of the steep path (which looked quite possible to do). You can’t see the footpath until after you have paid to go in. The staff in the ticket office warned us about the steepness of the path, but we had driven a long way to get there, and so we decided to continue. Insane? Yes!

The surroundings of Peveril Castle are dramatic, picturesque and offer great views across the Hope Valley. We visited on a Friday afternoon with only a handful of other visitors there. Whilst there we met a fantastic volunteer called Brian, who was able to tell us, in detail about the fascinating history of the castle. As a Peverall myself, the history of the castle and William Peverel, who established it, was even more poignant. I have only recently learnt of the history of the Peverels and the significance of the royal favour William recieved from William (the conquerer) 1st after the Norman conquest. My travelling partner, and old friend of 35 years accompanied me on the visit. Unlike me, he has a proven family lineage stretching all the way back to the Normans. They are the de Greys and they actually settled in Derbyshire being granted land, by the crown, that had previously been confiscated from William Peverel the younger. Having grown up together from an early age, we have only just learnt this connection, which feels remarkable. Brian certainly thought so too. Regardless of my own reasons for visiting, Peveril Castle is an excellent place to visit, in all respects. Throughly recommended!

Prepare yourself for the steep climb - it hurts!! But, it is worth it for the views and the history. We always think these places are a tad cheekily priced but you make the choice of whether to still visit or not. The ladies in the shop were really lovely both going in and as we left. Parking was a little bit difficult as it was so busy but overall, a beautiful site and most importantly, our dog could visit too!

Hi! How feasible is it to get a pushchair up to the castle? And approx. How long is the climb up? Thanks.
撰写日期:2023年6月10日
The castle site is probably not appropriate for pushchairs. There is a safe path up the hill but the site itself is a ruined castle with steep slopes and no real paths.

Is there a link between the castle and the caves beneath? I mean peak cavern was supposed to be a dungeon for the castle?

Does anyone know the height of the hill that Peveril castle sits on? I would also want to know how much (in feet or metres) below the top of this hill is Peak Cavern. Thank you.

Hi
I don't know but if you look up an ordnance survey map of the area it will give you the heights you are looking.

I know it's late but for others - I parked at the Peak Hotel car park - for 2-4 hours it's about £3 other wise £7 all day.

We are staying in Castleton for 3 days and plan to visit other attractions. how long would it take to "do" Peveril Castle including the walk up there?
撰写日期:2017年3月14日
Hi, I would say approximately 90 minutes will do. There's not much to see in the castle but the views are great. It's quite a steep walk up to the castle but you can take your time getting up there (there are some benches on the path so you can take a break). Castleton is a lovely village - have fun (We also enjoyed Speedwell Cavern if you like caves).
