We drove through the pretty village of Kilburn and up the winding road to the top of the hill - then a gentle walk. Wow, the views from the top over the valley were amazing - I was in awe. It was quite late in the afternoon and though quite cloudy, it was incredible - so peaceful and quiet.
We drove back down the hill and managed to take fantastic photographs of the iconic White Horse. So glad that we’ve seen it, both close up and from a distance!

Walked from the visitor centre at Sutton Bank. Gentle walk with great views! Gliders flying past overhead which are great to see.
Best place to view the horse is from a distance in the village of Kilburn on the way to it.
Nice little ice cream van at the bottom of the horse to refresh yourself after the walk.
Iconic site to see which I remember as a child so took my daughter to view it.
Great little walk too with the dog.

The cafe is open again-(why did nobody tell me?!) Been going here for years and it never changes. Lovely and reasonable meals - cheap tea and coffee-service with a smile from people who care and want you to enjoy your food. Lovely view of the airfield and beyond-a warm welcome whether you've a flight booked or not - and clean toilets too. All food cooked to order - and excellent quality and quantity. Cannot recommend the cafe and its staff highly enough. Thanks Liz and Sarah -great to see you again

I’d visited The White Horse a couple of years ago, so decided to go again in a different season.
The views from the top are tremendous, but tread carefully on your way up!

Really worth checking out. If you want to view the White Horse properly I would recommend stopping at Kilburn first as you don't get such a good view close up and may feel disappointed. Next you ought to do the loop past the hang gliding club to Sutton bank - on top of the horse but you won't actually see the horse. It's a very easy walk and the views are breathtaking.

As we were at the nearby Sutton Bank national park, we thought it a shame not to visit. The road there was very narrow in parts, so be careful! The car park was at the base but due to an injury I was unable to go up the steps and slope which were steep. Looks not as impressive close up and may need re-chalking.

We went to see the white horse rather than walk up to it where we knew we wouldn't get such a good view.
After a quick google, we discovered that the best view is just past the village sign as you enter Kilburn from Thirsk. There are 2 benches next to each other and a tiny laybay to pull into. It is right ahead of you enahancing an already beautiful landscape.
Definitely worth a stop in you are nearby.

Lovely walk along a proper path with great views across the countryside. We parked at the Visotor Centre - just over £2 for two hours. The only disappointment was that we expected to be able to see the White Horse from the walk and you couldn't. Youre on top of it! You have to go down to a car park (lots of steps!) and view from the bottom upwards. I have to say this was the one disappointment. Its not very impressive and needs alot of TLC to get rid of the weeds and "whiten" up the feature. Would still recommend this as the walk was amazing.

Stopped here to do a walk on our way to the North Yorkshire coast. Was a bit underwhelmed by the walk and the fact that you can't really see the white horse when you're there. But that's probably my fault for not paying attention when my husband said where we were going lol
Views were ok but having hiked most of the Lake District there are much better to be seen! However the paths were easy to follow and it was interesting to see the gliders taking off and landing at the nearby airfield

We had a fantastic walk along the ridge from the white horse to Sutton Bank. The glider club was in operation and so in addition to the world beating views from every angle, we watched gliders being towed to take off and then landing.
We would recommend this walk wholeheartedly.

There are steps (with no hand rail) and it is a steep incline so would only recommend for those who are physically fit and able to complete a moderately difficult walk.
It is not suitable for those in a wheelchair or with a pushchair. The paths from the North Yorkshire Moors Centre at Sutton Bank however are paved and less steep and it also has some great views.
There are two walks recommended from the car park at 1 hour and 3 hours long.
