no shade in car parks or at the market, could not find a craft stall, lots of trash & treasure, not much variety

Lovely market with many regular stall holders where there is something for everyone. Only had some bad buys where we were charged too much but use your discretion.

Daylesford, Victoria, for its rich geological past (9 extinct volcanos with Wombat Hill– the tallest in Vic.), heritage (part of goldmining era) and mineral springs is a real tourists Mecca. Also, it runs one of the best in Victoria Sunday Market. We visited it 9th of May.

The late autumn chill made the crowd of locals (often walking their dogs in unique novelties and attire) and visitors from both Victoria and interstate gathering sluggishly. However, by midday it formed a river flowing among the stalls in a rain of small, golden leaves falling from majestic elms, contrasting with the dark-blue cedars from the hills close by. Magic and unique to the Autumn Daylesford scenery.
Mothers and grandmothers holding Chrysanthemums and other flowers, fathers and grandfathers -with varieties of organically grown vegies, cacti and bric-a-brac stuff, headed towards the food stalls to line up and then to nearby tables to munch their lunches at the sounds of a 4-men-strong music band.

Market Manager, Mr Raoul, is always very busy, but especially so on important days such as Mother’s Day.

My Wife, (mom and grandma as well) got black honey (also known as honeydew honey) rich in flavour and low in sugar, black garlic (odorless but with impressive health benefits) and stunning French, Masque De Provence pumpkin. I got Milk-cup fungi (Lactarius rufus) a botanical relative of magic mushrooms and by their redness and taste, when BBQ-ed, similar to shrimps.

It was really a well celebrated Mother’s Day.

We timed our visit to Daylesford to coincide with the Sunday market, expecting a nice range of arts, antiques, food and drinks. But what was on offer was a small, mediocre market which was less interesting than most Victorian country markets. Certainly not a standalone destination.

Have you been to the Daylesford Marked lately? I visited it on the 1st Summer Sunday, after the dust from the long Victorian lockdown settled, curious about its AC (after covid) state.

The market was bubbling, much like BC (before covid). Some stalls are sadly gone but a variety of new stalls grew along the railway area, offering locally grown, baked, cooked, fermented and honey-enriched goodies, all showing the greatness of the local food basket. There are also stalls with handmade arts and crafts, with the quality of downtown boutiques and extravagant stores. With Christmas around the corner expect even more attractions to get you into the joyful spirit of the season.

There are a variety of native plants, herbs, irises (bearded and clean shaved) and amazing cacti and succulents, in an orgy of sizes, shapes and colours, a collective effort of Mother Earth and locals’ hands. They show once again that getting dirty with the soil during lockdown provides benefits to physical and mental health.

Overall, being there and seeing the market bursting at the seams, you may forget that the pandemic was a recent event.

So, should you look for the healthiest greenies, the tastiest loaf of bread, rare cactus, an old mossy garden décor… you name it, the Daylesford Sunday Market visit is a must. Also, consider bringing your own pre-loved items for sale. Do not hesitate to contact Roaul, the Sunday Market Manager, to get a spot with a stunning view of the volcanic, yet safe hills and sky reaching shady trees.

While holidaying at Creswick we travelled the short distance to Daylesford to check out the market, it was very good, one of the best attended and largest markets we have been to in a long time .
Well laid out in the railway station grounds it was very well organised.
Some good food stalls there, we had a nice lunch from one selling Potatoe Rotti.
Plenty of clothes stalls, lots of different food and plant vendors and every sort of nicknacks , tools, bags, antiques, craft the list goes on .
Well worth attending when your in the area.

Located in the picturesque, rural Victoria, in the Hepburn Springs and wineries area, close to past gold fields that made our state rich and famous - Daylesford Sunday Market is one of the finest around.

It spans over 2 levels. Upstairs - the old railway station with a still operating train, there are the stalls with fresh, locally grown greenery and food. (NB Try Chris and Bonnie coffee and pancakes, quite uplifting on chilly mornings). In the paddock there are stalls with typical bric a brac and plants across the whole botany; dragon trees, cacti and succulents, some with strange smells attracting a multitude of people.

No two Daylesford markets are the same, each has its own dynamic depending on weather, stall holders and visitors; a fluid mix of locals, Melbournians and international visitors (in a pre-COVID era). Yet, every morning there is a shared sense of pumping adrenaline when the stallholders unpack.

After the market there are like in an a, b, c order: art galleries, boutiques, cafe’s and other countless numbers of indoor/outdoor venues to enjoy in DAYLESFORD. And if you have anything you’d like to sell, you can always contact the Sunday Market Manager, Mr Raoul. He is an extremely helpful bloke, always ready to help you organise a stall. So, see you there!
