The visitor's center is very limited, the gowns were the major display. There is a film that did not comment on a number of first ladies. This could be so much more. The Saxton house was much better. We had a good tour guide and we learned a lot about what had happened to the building over time. Make sure you take this tour.

I didn’t even know McKinley had a house in Canton and only stumbled onto it while looking at the First Ladies Museum. The parking lot for both is located behind the McKinley House. You walk a block to the First Ladies Museum for tickets and to start the tour. Our tour took about 30 minutes and it was interesting and informative. We didn’t spend a lot of time in the museum, but they do have some original articles of clothing of Ida McKinley and replicas of inaugural gowns of First Ladies. Well worth a stop.

We enjoyed the self-guided tour. The place was small but interesting. Especially liked the room about the McKinleys, local heroes. The film in the theater in the basement was good, too.

We spent about 20 minutes here. We could not tour of the Saxton house, there are only three guided tours a day, None on Sunday or Monday, and we miss them. We walked through the first lady’s garden.

There were a few miniature dresses and some photographs of the first ladies wearing them. We saw Laura Bush, Michelle Obama and Melania Trump’s inaugural gowns. There was a short film about the first ladies and their messages.

The best part of our visit to the First Lady Museum of Canton was that when we arrived, they weren’t offering any more guided tours. That means we could peruse the outdated, stereotype displays of first lady glamor on our own without paying anything and without having to pretend to be enthralled in the wonder of changing female fashion throughout the decades.

First Lady Museum focuses mainly on the president’s wife as a symbol of trendy garments, and it details their origins as well as the mindset of those innovative first ladies who dared breach precarious cultural boundaries selecting and ultimately wearing them. There was a little bit scattered hither and thither on the personalities and achievements of these women, but mostly it was an exercise that revisited old school ideology that a woman’s place was to support her man, especially in the White House.

One of the amusing videos I watched showed a series of presidents’ wifes dating back to Calvin Coolidge in a cross-section of mind-blowing public appearances. This included riding alongside the president, dancing with the president, and holding his bible at inauguration. Of course, this historic memorabilia dwarfed in comparison to the eye-catching dress collection of Pat Nixon, Betty Ford, Rosalyn Carter, Nancy Reagan, Barbara Bush, Hillary Clinton, Laura Bush, Michelle Obama, and, lest we forget, the dashing and ever-appealing role model, Melania Trump.

I might have missed it when stumbling through the museum in what felt like a drunken stuppard, but there was no visible, auditory, or cinematic display on how any of these first ladies actually influenced policy, let alone on any of the controversies that their independent behaviors may have provoked. In contrast, I did spend a few painful minutes inside a miniature theater watching a short documentary on presidential galas. This definitely expanded my understanding of our nation’s first ladies from simple mute companions to serving as dance partners as well.

Most people associate Canton with the NFL Hall of Fame. This attraction makes me think they may be Ohio's top city for tourism in general.

This museum and historical site is relatively new, having recently been acquired by the national park service, and they're slowly expanding. Currently they're in two buildings. You start at their education center, which is housed in a former bank building, retaining many of the bank's features incluing 19th century architecture. Then, every hour on the hour, a park ranger will take you on a tour of the nearby Saxton home, where Mrs. Ida McKinley was born and raised and for a time lived with her presidentt-husband.

The site is a bit heavier on Ida McKinley than any other first lady--which is understandable since she was a Canton native and so they have access to more material for her. But they have a good start toward having rich detail about most of them.

You will find the site has something of interest to almost everyone. I was most amused by a video of recent inaugural balls with the presidents and first ladies dancing together--in some cases, clearly focused on one another, in other cases, the president stopping to wave to the crowd--in the case of the Clintons, both of them. Quite a contrast.

I believe I'll be wanting to get back to here after they open up more exhibits. For one trhing, we've found that we like to visit Presidenial libraries and memorials--this place balances the ledger. Next time I'll remember to take my US National Parks pass and I'll get in free.

There is a pay to park garage next door.. Admission is free. There are numerous examples of gowns of first ladies on display and some historical information. The best part is the series of videos. Each is about 45 minutes and there are several (I think 4) of them. There is a small gift shop. COVID-19: The rangers were masked and visitors were expected to remain masked and practice social distancing during their stays.

Neat small museum that has a historical house as well to tour (the house is currently closed, but museum is open). Mostly political item's, but enough personal artifacts to even it out. Give yourself an hour.

I was finally able to check out this place. It is not very big, but it does have lots of information about the First Ladies. The First Ladies from Ohio do get featured more often. The Saxton-McKinley House is next door. This is the home of Ida McKinley, the 25th First Lady. Lots of great information. This is definitely worth a visit for educational purposes.
