Cleveland is awful. There is nothing to do after you waste your hour at the R&R roll HOF. It might have been ok if there was a sporting event going on but even then I am not sure because anything decent is closed. A majority of the restaurants, especially the more upscale ones are boarded up after the George Floyd riots. That was 4 months ago and it still looks like a war zone. I have a feeling most aren't coming back nor am I. We spent most of our time in our hotel room. We were back in by 7 both nights because there is seriously NOTHING to do, there were no people out and about, it was the worst major city I've ever been to.

This is part of the revived downtown. It's all impressive after the decades of decline. But note that some other districts are more lively.

A playground of vanilla privilege with incredibly tasty beer and fantastic food, but what makes this great are the people of Cleveland. Okay, they have the money to buy tacos and beer and sports memorabilia, and they're primed for a good time, but they are FRIENDLY. There is no pretension here. Good God Beast of America, even at this time, you can walk up to strangers and chat, chat, chat. It's fantastic. The blue collar roots of Cleveland remain even as the blue collar jobs are gone.

Great area. We came down before going to the theatre district. Plenty of people were about. There are great choices of restaurants on 4th street. It's nice to see this area turned around over the last few years. Love the Land. You can stop in the Cleveland shop and get some Cleveland gear. There's a great candy shop filled with candy we hadn't seen since we were kids.

What was the original Theatre district in Cleveland before moving to Playhouse Square, East 4th is now pedestrian only. Not sure where to start? The Cleveland Visitor Center is right on the corner & a good place to star. Want to pick up a souvenir from Cleveland? CLE Clothing Co is next door. Food, comedy, local & national bands? All on East 4th including Michael Symon's Lola's, Hilarities Comedy Club inside Pickwick & Frolic & The House of Blues next to or across the street from each other. Before or after a game, you can't go wrong for the atmosphere.

We enjoyed the many visits we made to the Gateway District. There are a lot of great restaurants, shops, some beautiful architecture and some fun attractions. The Gateway District is a must see when visiting Cleveland.

There are definitely lots of sports venues, and the parking is tough. But yes, they've started opening many bars and restaurants, but I don't think it's really that nice to walk around just yet. Especially at night near the venues.

Made our first visit to Cleveland last week -- we've always avoided it like the plague due to the city's historically bad reputation, but my oh my, things have definitely changed.
We knew that downtown parking could be a bit of a problem, so we looked for and found a lot with shade and an $8 maximum at Euclid & 6th, which was just what we needed. First stop as always for our downtown walking adventures is to find the Visitors Center, which in Cleveland is at Euclid & 4th. The staff were very helpful with their advice and gave us all the maps and brochures that we needed to find our way around on our own.
One great tip they gave us was about the E-Line color-coded trolley system (see http://www.riderta.com/routes/e-line). Anyone can ride these trolleys for free so it's like getting a tour for nothing. You can get on and off wherever as you like, but we elected to ride around the entire green line loop to scope out places to check out later. Besides, few things can match riding a bus with the natives to make you feel like a local.
Another great tip we got from the Visitors Bureau was that there are washrooms available downstairs to your right from the Euclid Avenue entrance to The Arcade, which is now a Hyatt Regency hotel. Washrooms or not, you definitely have to go inside The Arcade to look, because it's spectacular.
Once we had a good general sense of what was where and in which direction, we set about exploring the area on foot. After having such a terrible impression of Cleveland all these years, our opinion did a complete 180 in about 30 minutes upon seeing all the rejuvenation going on downtown. We especially noted the way that the city's historic buildings are being preserved and re-purposed for the 21st century, rather than being torn down and replaced with soulless modern crap. Unfortunately, I can only dream about the day my own city planners might ever have that kind of vision.
After a few hours we stopped and had a nice lunch in a sidewalk cafe, then walked around some more. We visited many, many interesting places over the course of the day, and going in and out of various buildings supplied periodic breaks from the outdoor heat. We eventually rewarded ourselves with a visit to 4th Street for happy hour (which we discovered is way more than an hour long in most places in Cleveland), had another meal and another short walkabout and then called it a day a bit after dark.
Not everyone has the same degree of enthusiasm that we do for doing self-guided walking tours, but the free trolleys can help get you to the bulk of the larger attractions in the surrounding area if you don't want to hoof it a lot. However, we think that plain old walking around is a great way to see a city, and downtown Cleveland now appears safe enough to do that.
Very impressed with what's happening in Cleveland these days, and looking forward to coming back.
