very cool
2019年6月 • 独自旅游
Despite not having a personal connection to the Great Lakes region, the sinking of the Edmund Fitzgerald always piqued my interest. So when I discovered the Mather, a somewhat similar ship, I knew I had to visit. It was very cool to walk the ship, there really wasn’t any area that you couldn’t access. The views or Lake Erie were great. They did have a directional system on the floor that you are supposed to follow, and at some point it kinda got my a little off track, but it’s definitely worth a stop. My visit was in Aug 2017, and at the time you did not need to buy tickets to the nearby science museum to access the Mather, despite the affiliation. Not sure if that has changed.

A surprising interesting tour.
Unexpectedly, most family members enjoyed this more than other museums. Interesting view of inside a laker. Hot and lots of stairs, but they warn you before you pay. Affordable at $9.00, took a good hour, and some good photo ops. A nostalgic trip down memory lane with some of the time period furniture.

Quick visit to stretch our legs & see history
2019年8月 • 家庭
We were headed to another state but wanted a stopping point to get out and stretch our legs. The walk along the pier was gorgeous and it just sits right next to the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame too. The ship was a neat attraction. It's a self guided tour so you can take as much or as little time as you want. Most of the ship is accessible. You see all the captains and crew quarters. The sheer size of the engine room was amazing. The galley is huge and to think of cooking for 25 men. The flagship was neat to see. We visited with our young teenagers and they enjoyed wandering the ship and seeing everything.

very educational and fun
Nice little exhibit area inside the ship, with history of the lake and shipping, environmental information, and a nie exhibit on the wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald. The tour is self-guided. I was surprised to find out they sometimes carried passengers and had some nice rooms for them. The middle of the ship was one big storage area for whatever they were transporting. You walk along the top of the ship to the back where there are more accommodations, engine room, etc. I wasn't expecting much, but it was so interesting that the next thing I knew we'd been there almost two hours. Really a worthwhile visit.

Surprising and educational find for the entire family!

We stumbled upon the Steamship William G. Mather as we were departing a different museum and heading back to our car. This is an exhibit not to be missed. I had no idea how interesting the steamship would be. It is quite accessible, and you end up viewing the entire boat from top to bottom. The preservation of history is amazing--from the actual crew and guest quarters to the kitchen and the engine room. It makes you really pause and think about life onboard back in the day. You can bring the entire family on a tour, and there are restrooms and places to sit.

Tip: It can be somewhat of a strenuous tour because you are climbing narrow metal stairs. Make sure you wear sensible shoes and bring something to drink on a hot day, as the ship is not air conditioned.

I really did enjoy touring this ship. I am afraid of heights and did struggle at times with this but it was very much worth it! loved seeing the authentic decor and board games. I appreciate the fact they point out how many steps are involved in the tour just so people understand what the self guided tour entails.

History Abounds
2019年7月 • 夫妻情侣
I was close to rating this a five- went back and forth. We really enjoyed touring this ship- all of the materials on board are period correct from when the old vessel worked the great lakes. Lots of cool things to see. The water is very high so it was a CHORE to get aboard- a steep climb up the ramp. We saw some older folks and somehow they made it! The man on the bridge was helpful and full of Cleveland history- he was awesome! Definitely worth a stop here to see the boat which is kept in great shape!

Rock N Boom on the Mather
2019年7月 • 夫妻情侣
We were really excited to go on the Mather for the 4th of July Rock N Boom. We spent $34 for 2 tickets and $7 to park (garage was charging $20 to park if NOT there for Rock N Boom). It was kind of disappointing because although we had a great vantage point from the top of the ship, the lights in the parking lot were so bright and they got in the way of the fireworks show. We would not do this again.
