The old canal is the outstanding feature, and reason for the existence, of the park - and deservedly so. The trail is level and well maintained, part asphalt and long stretches of crushed rock, easy to walk on. But the best way to see the trail and the vestiges of the canal and all the interpretive signs, is by bike. Bring you own or rent one. You can easily cover a lot of the path with lots of places to stop to rest, take a drink or have a snack that you packed. Picnic and refreshment stops several miles apart will help. Although we went on a summer weekend and there were a number of DayGlo skintight outfited Lance Armstrong wannabes, there is still plenty of room for the casual bikers, who are far in the majority. The park hit a home run with this idea.

The Cuyahoga River, which is paralleled by the canal and towpath, was once the most polluted river in the world and the canal and towpath are the beginning of its industrialization. Today Cleveland and the Cuyahoga have changed so dramatically that the reward is the Cuyahoga Valley National Park, a symbol for environmental restoration. From Cleveland through the national park to Akron, this remnant of the first mode of transportation is a regional highlight and source for outdoor fitness, walking, jogging and biking. You really need to visit to enjoy the experience and see the restoration.
We visited the path several times within the park walking at the Canal Exploration Center, around Station Bridge and at the Beaver Marsh. In fact if you bike you can see all of this within a morning. It is a great asset for the region so be sure to walk some on it when you are in Cleveland.

Enjoyed hiking along the towpath and taking offshoots. Very relaxing taking in the variety of birds and creatures in the Cuyahoga river as we meandered along.

Had a great family walk along this trail. It had hills for the kids to climb and slide to get down as well as walking paths for regular people. Saw a beautiful blue heron who posed for us.

If I lived in the Cleveland/Akron area I would be on this trail as much as possible. It is a trail with running, hiking, biking, skiing. and horseback riding options. It starts in downtown Cleveland and runs to Akron with over 80 miles of beautiful sights, historical markers, and opportunities to see wildlife.
I rode the 20 miles that run through Cuyahoga Valley National Park. I thought I would ride at a leisurely pace and be done in 90 minutes or so. Instead, I found myself stopping to take in the wildlife, reading the historical markers (Who knew that each lock on the canal would have a unique historical role/story?), and stopping in the charming towns along the trail. I ended up taking almost 4 hours to complete the ride.
Just off the top of my head, I saw woodpeckers, chipmunks, squirrels, deer, cardinals, herons, ducks, geese, hawks, and turtles on my ride.
There are numerous trails that branch off of the Towpath Trail...each one tugged at me to veer off to explore. i will have to do those on my next visit.

One of best out of state trails we have rode. We started at Botzum trail head and went to Boston Mill. Trail is well maintained and shady. Very diverse landscape. Loved the history markers that explained the canal -amazing. Did this ride on Monday and it was fairly busy but most people were polite and shared the road. Wish We could go another day.

This trail is great if you need a paved trail for bicycling or wheelchairs or stollers, or if you want a longer hike. Many sections are not too interesting though. However, I really enjoyed the section through Beaver Marsh. Also, I appreciate the historical significance of the towpath and canal and wonder about the people who worked to create it and use it.

All purpose trail heading south along the Cuyahoga river and remains of the Ohio and Erie Canal. Someday it will continue uninterrupted north to Lake Erie.

We drop our car off at Akron train station and ride our bikes to Cleveland. We take the train back for $5.00 they load and unload your bikes for your convenience. On the train you can stop anywhere heading back. There is a snack train that is accessible so bring cash or card.

Excellent tour fully loaded with panniers and gear for a week. Varied surfaces but, considering the almost 90 miles, most were in excellent condition! It was beautiful and peaceful to ride along the "Crooked River" during the cool, autumn days. I do think the SIGNAGE could be a bit better to keep a cyclist on the TOWPATH versus all of the other trails that intersect it. Lovely ride- thank you for maintaining this towpath for others enjoyment!

I am trying to plan a two day bike ride of the Ohio and Erie Canal Towpath trail. Ideally i would like to go about 30 miles, stay overnight somewhere and then go back. Any idea on how to do that?
Thank you for your time!

There are numerous designated parking areas along the path - ay of these are usually quite safe to park at.

We stayed at the Inn at Brandywine Falls and walked the Stanford Trail to access the Towpath. Other guests that biked the Towpath, accessed the trail via the Metro Parks Bike&Hike Trail and Highland Road. We really enjoyed the Inn.
