The Kelton House Museum and Garden is a historic Greek Revival and Italianate mansion that was built in 1852 and has been restored to represent a time period between 1852 and 1900 in order to promote an understanding of daily life, customs and decorative arts in 19th century Columbus, Ohio, and to educate visitors about the Underground Railroad. Located at 586 East Town Street in the Discovery District of downtown Columbus, the two-story, brick residence was built for Fernando Cortez Kelton, a merchant from Vermont who rose to prominence in Columbus as a dry goods wholesaler. Fervent abolitionists, Kelton and his wife Sophia used their home as a top on the Underground Railroad. In fact, Kelton was so respected for his devotion to the abolitionist cause, he was selected as a pallbearer at the funeral procession of Abraham Lincoln when Lincoln's remains were brought to Columbus on their way to Springfield, Illinois, for burial. The last member of the Kelton family to live in the house died in 1975. It is estimated that 80 to 90 percent of the furnishings in the home were owned by the Kelton family. The house was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1979 and to the Columbus Register of Historic Properties in 1982.

Great historical tour for a minimal price. We learn something new each time we tour this house that's been restored. Part of the underground railroad.

We had a few hours to burn before a game in Columbus, and I came across this diamond in the rough. The garden and path were amazing. The house itself has been restored beautifully. The fact that one family owned this house and all of their heirlooms are still there is awesome. The tour was great (about an hour), and very informative. All the history tied to the house along with it being part of the underground railroad just made it that much more interesting. Did I mention it was $10 for both my son and I to take the tour? Very friendly staff. Would take other people back and do it again.

I brought my two boys, ages 14 and 10 to the Kelton House as part of our studies on slavery and Ohio history. Kathy, our tour guide, did an amazing job bringing the Kelton’s family history back to life while simultaneously helping my children understand the hardship of escaped slaves during the mid 1800’s.

Intriguing family which built and lived in this house for decades. The tour takes about an hour -- a great glimpse into history. The backyard is a beautiful place to sit or for weddings/receptions. Take a walk in this interesting urban neighborhood -- be sure to check out the magnificent topiary garden right around the corner!

Gain a lot of information. Didn't see much that pertained to underground railroad but verbal information and a few pics.

My wedding at Kelton House was perfect. The staff was very easy to work with and very accommodating. They worked with us to have a successful socially distanced and safe wedding. Because it is a smaller venue, they were able to give us a lot of personal attention, which was great for a bride planning her downsized, last minute Covid-19 wedding! The garden is GORGEOUS. I got tons of compliments from those that attended in person as well as those that attended the live stream. And the bridal get ready room was beautiful for pictures and has an amazing floor length mirror and blue decor. I cannot recommend the Kelton House enough!

$7 per person. Have to ring a bell and awaiting someone answering it before going inside. No designated tour times and we got there about 10 minutes into a guided tour so we missed the introduction to the site. We had an excellent male tour guide on that Sunday afternoon, and he did take us back to the 2 areas that we initially missed and answered more questions. This is a tour of the Kelton's home but not much is actually known about their involvement in the Underground Railroad besides 2 people that they helped. There is a display and model room downstairs with some information about slaves and the Underground Railroad that is self-guided. What I enjoyed was that nearly all of the furniture and displayed items are original to the family. These items usually get sold off and replicas or other era time pieces get brought in. The small gardens outback would be perfect for an small, intimate wedding.

Awesome Wedding Venue! We used the Kelton House for a COVID wedding and it was simply lovely and wonderful. Sarah at Kelton House was an awesome help and worked with us to make sure every one of our plans was executed flawlessly. An amazing experience at an amazing place! I highly recommend to all!

I took my elderly mother to the Kelton House today. She uses a walker, and can't hear well. The website says the first floor is wheelchair accessible (I never found an entrance that didn't have steps) and there is a video tour of the rest of the house available. There seemed to be one man working there, and he didn't offer any information about a video tour, although it was obvious that my mother couldn't climb stairs. Since my mother can't hear well, the audio guide was useless to her. I may come later by myself, since there was a lot we didn't see (we were able to see four first-floor rooms and the carriage house). Maybe I'll be more impressed then.

Is there parking available or must one park on the street? Also, are your hours still the same, as listed, on Saturdays?
Thank You,
Don S.

We needed to find parking on the street. As for their hours, sorry we can't help. We were there on a Wednesday and don't know their operating hours otherwise.
