The plays in Schiller park are wonderful! Our family looks forward to going every season to see a Shakespeare play. We take a blanket and picnic dinner and enjoy the evening. It is free, although they ask for a donation, this year they asked rather aggressively. But they do not charge admission. Bathrooms are located in the athletic building and as long as it isn't raining just before the performance it is on with the show. We've taken kids from 4 and right up to adult. Our fav so far was A Midsummer Night's Dream!

For those of you who haven't made it to Schiller Park yet this season, you still have 2 more weekends before the end of the season. The season runs Thursday thru Sunday nights until September 1st.

This was the season of "Tainted Love". Actor's Theater kicked off their 2019 season with a production of Beowulf (and the Bard) at the Mad Lab Theater before moving to Schiller Park for productions of Romeo and Juliet (Shakespeare), Little Women (Louisa May Alcott), As You Like It (Shakespeare) and closing out the season with Les Liaisons Dangereuses (Dangerous Liaisons by Christopher Hampton).

I wrestled with a 4 vs 5-star rating but ultimately down-graded them to a 4-star for production issues this season. I'm not sure when they started using microphones mounted on the stage floor as opposed to having the microphones worn by the cast members but they had some real issues with the audio this season. I first noticed issues during their production of Little Women but was still able to enjoy the production. However, during the production of As You Like It - the sound issues, coupled with the Shakespearian language/accents - made the play very difficult to follow. When I mentioned my concerns to an usher at intermission, he basically "blew me off" and said - everything was working as it should. It seems they got the audio issues resolved in time for the final show of the season.

Despite the audio issues that plagued 2 of the productions, Actor's Theater still presented a very good season of summer theater in the park and the cast and crew should be commended for their efforts.

Looking forward to the 2020 season.

If you want to experience one of the local Columbus summer traditions, come see Shakespeare in the Park on summer nights. Some of the best actors in Columbus put on a free outdoor performance at Schiller Park in the heart of German Village. Locals brings chairs, blankets and picnics and enjoy the warm summer nights in one of Columbus' most beautiful parks.

Where to begin? We wanted to try the Actor's Theater summer offering while visiting our daughter and son in law who recently moved to Columbus, and while not thrilled about the description of this play, we thought we'd give it a try. Not having really close seats, sound was a problem, with many characters either unmiked or poorly miked. Some actors were fine, but a number of actors in fairly major roles were quite amateurish. But my biggest criticism is for the script itself, which was confusing at best, lacking in memorable lines or drama, and entirely too long. It was a pleasant evening to be sitting out in Schiller park, and yes, it was free, so I can't really complain--we got our money's worth.

This is an outdoor rendition of Shakespearean Plays with lighting, sound effects & experienced actors. Bring chairs or blanket, a cooler or if you prefer there is food available to purchase. These plays are made possible by community & audience donation. Believe me you will be so
so happy with the performances that you won't think twice about a $5-10 plus donation. It's still an inexpensive but relaxing evening with family, friends or significant others. There are 3-4 different plays during the summer and we try to see all of them. Some twice. Beautiful Schiller Park is the venue. Enjoy!

Actor’s Theater is another one of Columbus’ “hidden gems”. They have been presenting plays (predominately Shakespeare) in Schiller Park in German Village since 1982 and they are now well into their 32nd season. Their season generally runs from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend at Schiller Park in German Village and starting last year there has been one post-Labor Day production in Columbus Commons.

This is “free theater” in the park but – as they always point out – “free really isn’t free”. Actually it’s more of a “pay what you will” theater since they “pass the basket” during intermission for donations.

Schiller Park in German Village is a beautiful park and is a nice place to visit even when not coming for Actor’s Theater. But – there’s nothing better on a nice summer evening than to bring a picnic and either a chair or a blanket (they reserve the front section for blankets only) and to enjoy an evening of food and theater. Be forewarned, however, that the front row seats are usually taken by about 6:30. Many people will stop and drop off their chairs to save their space then walk to one of the German Village restaurants for dinner. Personally, while I think there are some great restaurants in German Village, I still prefer the picnic aspect of coming to the park.

Generally – they present 3 plays in Schiller Park and – as noted above – have recently started offering a 4th production in Columbus Commons. In the early 2000’s – they were only doing 2 plays and for a part of their history they did 3 Shakespeare plays. Currently, their season includes 1 or 2 Shakespeare productions and 1 or 2 non-Shakespeare plays. Their non Shakespeare productions have included classics such as The Three Musketeers (2009), The Scarlet Pimpernel (2011), Robin Hood (2012) and King Artheru and the Sword of Britian (2013) among others.

Actor’s Theater presents some interesting twists and not have of their productions are truly classic Shakespeare. For example, they did Romeo and Juliet in 2013 (Columbus Commons) and presented it set in a post apocalyptic New York City; also in 2013 they presented Twelfth Night set in the 1980’s (costumes and all) - and several years ago they did one of their Shakespeare productions (I think it was Macbeth) wearing Civil War costumes. Their opening production this season was Hamlet and they featured a female actress in the role of Hamlet (BTW – she was not only female but is also a teenager and she was EXCELLENT in the role).

This is a great way to spend a summer evening. Productions are Thursday thru Sunday evenings and – not surprisingly – Friday and Saturday are the most crowded.
