For those local to Lake County (or nearby) this is the go-to spot to do an invigorating hike. If you do a bit of weaving about and backtracking, you can get ten miles in. But don't worry if you're not a seasoned hiker! Both the north and south entrances (there are three to the park) provide some much easier flat hiking. The south entrance also has a children's playground. All three entrances have parking and rest rooms, plus the south and Skok Meadow entrances have pavilions. Do pay attention to signage and make sure that you are heading back to the correct parking area as you can get turned around and turn your three mile wander into something significantly longer. A new viewing area at the north end (handicap accessible) provides a gorgeous view of the creek below.

I visited Girdled Road Reservation on two days in mid-November. My goal was to get in a good walk and hike all the trails. This park is for more serious hikers as there are steep descents and accents on the trails. Each of the three parking areas have at least one trail that is fairly flat and stays up on the ridge. The harder trails descend into the valley. The trails were well groomed and marked and I saw very few people during my walks.

The first day I parked at the Radcliff road entrance and combined the Green Darner, South Meadow Loop, and Oak Leaf Loop Trails for a nice walk of just over 4 miles with a total altitude change of 299 feet. This route only requires you to down and back up once.

The second day I parked at the Skok Meadow entrance. I combined the Skok Meadow, Creek Crossing, part of the Oak Leaf, Chickadee, Valley View Overlook, and Surveyor’s Loop Trails for hike just under 5 ½ miles. This route requires you to go up and down the valley 2 ½ times with a total altitude gain of 526 feet…you will feel the burn on the last climb out. There is a cool swing bridge crossing on the Creek Crossing Trail and lots of little waterfalls to see. Great park for walking and getting into shape while enjoying great views.

So it's winter and many people still want to get out! If there is enough snow, they will groom it for cross country skiing (there's also a marked snowshoe trail), but without deep snow, it's still great for hiking and trail running. We hike there a couple of times a month, year round, and there have been very few times that we haven't met other hikers or runners. Do be careful if you're meeting people as there are three separate entrances to the park! Also, if there is ice, you may want to wear cleats or use poles if you are hiking... there are some steep hills and the trails can get slippery. Otherwise, winter can be gorgeous with the snow on the trees and the streams glistening with ice.

Having been a big fan of the Lake Metroparks, we often either visit one on our own or with a couple of little ones (canines). We recently hiked around this location using the Skok Meadow entrance as the north, south and Skok Meadow parking areas all have paths that tie the full park together. Now, there is the easy circle at Skok, but if you head towards the main area, down the fairly steep hill-steeper on the way up:)- you come to a, for lack of a better term, monkey bridge (as in one you would see Scouts build). Crossing the stream then gets you into the main reservation and quite a decent hike towards the south side and such. Great views along the way and not an easy hike, so wear decent shoes and even a walking stick would be a good idea.

The park is about fifteen minutes from the interstate. There are three entrances: the northern entrance leads to a challenging gorge trek. The southern entrance leads to a long bridle trail with a small pond along the way. The Skok Road entrance goes through a long meadow, down a steep hill, and through a forest and over a small suspension bridge spanning Big Creek. The trails intersect, but unfortunately there is no loop circling the entire park.

If you’re a serious hiker and live around the Lake County, Ohio area, it’s hard to find a local park where you can do 10 miles with hills. But if you do a few figure eights and an out and back, you can get in close to 10 miles with some good hills and some flats where you can do a fast pace. A swinging bridge, a stream and a variety of flowers in various seasons keeps this hiking area from getting boring.

Whether you are an ambler or a serious hiker, this park will provide the opportunity for movement! There are three entrances (make sure you specify if you're meeting friends), and each one will provide you with different experiences. If you park at Skok Meadow (best restrooms -- heated in winter), you can hike the flat, meadow trails. There is a nice overlook, as well as a picnic pavilion and small pond. If you park at the north entrance, you can either do a short, flat loop or head down the hill to explore the valley. The south entrance has two large parking areas and is also the parking area used for those bringing in their horses. Again, two sets of restrooms and a nice pavilion are present, along with two large ponds, one with a very active beaver colony. For serious hikers, if you do all of the trails (with a couple of very short duplications) you'll get in a solid 10 mile hike with some good, steep hills. If you're prepping for a hike in the mountains, put on your gear, load up your backpack and practice here... that's what the Scouts do!

We love to hike here with our dog, athough he hates that suspension bridge and would rather walk/swim across the creek while we cross the bridge. There are lots of hiking and bridle trails and even a campsite that can be reserved online. The terrain is hilly on most trails, except for those around the meadow. There is also a pavilion with a fire pit, complete with firewood and bathrooms available here. We are at this park on a regular basis.

I like this park as it offers a harder trail and an easier trail. Depending on my mood, who I bring with me is how I choose which trail to take. The harder trail has many steps going up and down several times with beautiful scenery and a river.

The easier trail rounds a pond. Be ware there is lots of poison ivy along the upper (easier) trail.

This is a large park with three entrances, North, South and Skok Meadow. My daughter and I parked at the North entrance. There were a few shaded picnic tables with grills next to the parking lot. A single but clean pit toilet restroom serves this entrance. I understand the other entrances have more facilities but that probably also makes them more crowded on a busy day. There are several hiking trails of various lengths and difficulties and the trails all connect from one area to another so it’s possible to hike many miles by moving from one trail to another. My daughter and I hiked the Surveyor’s Woods Loop Trail that is about 1 ¼ miles in length starting at the north entrance. The trail is wooded and passes by a large pond where frogs croaked among the tall grasses and dragonflies swirled above blooming water lilies. It was a very pretty spot. The entire trail was quiet and we passed by only one or two other hikers (it was a week day). At several spots along the way there are benches where you can sit and take a rest or just look around and enjoy the beauty of the woods. This trail is not paved but it is wide and flat the entire way and an easy trail to walk. It would be good for seniors or those with limited abilities. Some trails permit horses and bikes (The Surveyor’s Woods Loop allows both). Others do not so be sure to consult the trail map.
