Telescope viewing was underwhelming, both outdoors (thank you to the generous volunteers who let us see through their telescopes) and upstairs through the 32" lens.

We viewed Saturn both outdoors on the lawn and upstairs through the big telescope. I was surprised how small Saturn looked through even the big telescope. Oh well. Makes you appreciate the Hubble telescope photos as well as close-ups taken be fly-by missions.

I enjoyed seeing the 4 Galilean moons for the first time, but was surprised how tiny Jupiter looked through the telescope on the lawn with the Dobsonian mount. Wasn't much bigger than what I see with my naked eye. But, of course, I can't see those moons without the telescope.

My favorite part of the visit was viewing the many artifacts, posters, atlases and astronomy books while waiting for the telescope viewing to begin.

I have been to the Perkins Observatory a handful of times and I love my visit every time. Do not expect a state of the art facility with all the latest gadgets. But expect to learn and be impressed by the wonderful director of the observatory, Tom Burns. He is a great speaker and on a night when it was completely cloudy and we didn't get to use the telescopes, we still managed to have a great time. My kids weren't even disappointed that we didn't get to use the telescopes, that is how great an educator and speaker he is. The place is like a leap back in time to a day where people viewed the stars up on this lonely hill in Delaware. A reasonably priced trip and a great time for the whole family.

We started out with a short lecture about what we would see, then we went upstairs to the BIG optical telescope and....what an experience that was! Later, outside several local amateur astronomers had the telescopes set up on the lawn and we got to see different sections of the sky. My favorite was the twin blue stars...Dress warmly, and please enjoy yourself!

We took our three daughters and had an amazing look through the telescope at the moon, Mercury and Venus. Our oldest is in 5th grade and was learning about the planets this helped peak her interest even more. The volunteers were extremely helpful and knowledgeable. Our daughters also had fun playing on the early computers. We stayed for the presentation and learned about the individual planets. The professor was funny and extremely informational.

This could not be less organized for the public. No microphone so whatever your guide is saying is muffled. The observatory has an interesting history and has been hosting tours for a very long time but it is poorly set up to do so. Even though our night sky was brilliant and clear the telescope was not used. Our guide kept saying it was cloudy. Yet when he did open the dome, we could all see stars. And if we had had the chance to observe, with the crowd of about 35 people it seems it would take an awfully long time for everyone to walk up and have a look. There should be some major improvements for groups. Just standing around not hearing a rambling discourse is not fun.
