WOW!

Holy....!! This place is HUGE! There is SO much to see and experience, that a little review won't do it justice! Just trust me that this is A MUST SEE destination! There's a little something for everyone's palate, and you'll need about 2 hours to really go through the place. It is handicap accessible, so go and enjoy this spectacular history museum!

Canal History and historical artifacts

We were very impressed with how well the museum was organized and the number of items from various parts of the city's history. We could have easily spent more time here.

A Hidden Gem

If you are ever in the Delphos are don’t miss the Delphos Canal Museum. This museum is also handicap accessible abs they have an elevator so you can be sure to visit all three floors. The displays are top notch and include a military room dedicated to our past veterans. Everything in this museum is impressive. Don’t miss the train exhibit. The train exhibit includes a scale of the city of Delphos in its glory day’s. Every exhibit is displayed very with a true vision of former days of Delphos and the surrounding area..

ADMISSION IS FREE with donations accepted.

Great local museum

It's a volunteer operation with limited hours so this was the first time I'd found it open. Three floors are filled with local history but that local history includes a time when canals were king. That's a story that goes far beyond the town.

The Delphos Canal Museum was great family fun!

Whodda thunk? I stopped with my 7-year-old grandson to see what the Canal Museum of Delphos, Ohio had to offer. “Not another dusty museum,” he begged. I negotiated with him to give it 5 minutes. Well, we ended up spending 1 1/2 hours there! He didn’t want to leave.

First of all, the museum is set up with themes. They have an excellent selection of items, and there are lots of moving parts. My grandson operated the antique cash register, the player piano, the old portable typewriter, the dial telephone, the butter churner, etc., all of course with supervision. Kids love things to do.

From my perspective, I kept saying “Oh, I remember that,” and invariably I had a story to share with him. It was a great way to connect intergenerationally. Isn’t that what history is all about?

I highly recommend a moment to stop and enjoy this wonderful gem of a museum.

Nice people. The canal artifacts were quite unique. The wedding dress display was a nice way to showcase the different eras.

Limited hours unlimited fun

The Delphos Museum is actually misnamed,. A prize exhibit is the remains of a canal boat discovered and excavated by local teens, but that only takes up a small part of the three floors of historical exhibits. Not only that, this has got to be the best bargain (free admission) and downright friendliest museums I have ever visited. Not only did we not have to pay to get in, the docent immediately greeted us and offered us free coffee! She even apologized to my wife for not asking her if she wanted a glass of water instead! She then gave us our coffee in the parlour exhibit. Instead of yelling at us not to spill, she all but ordered us to sit down and try out the old player piano ourselves. What a difference from the typical museum experience! She also asked if we wanted to see the new model train display. I am always interested in that, so she took us down to the basement and ran the trains for us or we would have missed all the exhibits of railroad memorabilia and local manufacturing down there. Upstairs exhibits include a collection of bridal gowns, militaria, old medical/ dental/ barber tools, an old log cabin, and school artifacts. I especially liked the photo history of a local teacher and her classes over 40 years. My wife found the old perm machine terrifying, while my son was interested in the old toys. The only drawback is the museum is only open limited hours 1-3 Sat and Sun plus a few other times not listed on the website, so call before you go to make sure it will be open and a pot of coffee waiting for you.
