We are giving this a 5 rating, which it deserves, but this may not be for all visitors.

Ernest Warther was a Swiss immigrant who developed a genius for carving. He created numerous clever and highly detailed carvings. The most striking of these are models of trains carved from ebony and ivory (noting repeatedly that it was not from elephants that have been killed). The models are astonishing for their accuracy and attention to detail.

He also has carvings of other things. One was of the floor of a steel mill where he worked, complete with workers displaying personality and even one smoking a cigar.

There are helpful signs about all of the works, pointing out areas of particular interest. The displays are highly well done and extremely professional. There are even messages on the floor about additional details you might want to notice.

Warther had a strong family life and the family connection is evident everywhere in the museum, which gives it a very personal touch.

As the title notes, this isn't your typical museum. Part of its charm is how unusual it is and the astonishingly high quality of the works it contains. There are additional buildings on the grounds. His original workshop is incorporated into the museum itself. He created his own excellent knives, which can be brought in one structure. Another includes some button exhibits that include one that Mary Todd Lincoln wore at Lincoln's second inauguration.

Access is easy off of I-77 and the museum is about a quarter of a mile off the freeway.

We continued to talk about our visits days afterward.

Absolutely incredible. I have gone many times over the years, but haven't gone with children yet. I've showed my own kids videos of the carvings, but haven't made the trek yet to show them in person. Moony Warther was an absolute genius, and it's so thrilling to be able to witness so much genius in one place. We also own Warthers knives and they are equally fabulous. We are so thrilled to have come across this small business and museum.

We have visited a couple of times. The first time we took a guided tour. It was informative and we enjoyed learning about the carvings. We visited the house, gardens, and button house as well.

We visited for a Christmas trip this year to see the Festival of Trees. It was a fun treat to see all of the trees and look at all of the carvings again. There were performers periodically (you could call ahead to see the schedule).

Since we were their last, they've added a knife collection. The history is interesting.

This is a wonderful company. My grandmother bought a knife set for a wedding gift for me over twenty years ago. One of the knives broke and they replaced it for no cost. They also have a lifetime warranty on sharpening your knives. I appreciate the customer service.

I visited Warther Museum on 10/17/21 along with my young daughter who is autistic and 5 more in our party . Upon entry we were told we could take either a self guided tour or a guided tour . We chose self guided . Our small group was in the main area when the current guided group swarmed around us . My young daughter lost sight of me abs anyone else she knew . She began to panic abs was walking around the room calling out “mommy “. She was not yelling or running . Simply walking around calling out for me . In under one minute I had her by the hand , she immediately quieted down and I was leading her away . The tour guide (John) admonished me to keep her quiet (which she was at that point ) he was trying to give a tour . I apologized to him and told him she’s autistic and got overwhelmed when the large group he was guiding swarmed around us. At that point he told me “well I don’t see a sign “. I told him my handicapped daughter did not have to wear a sign , he said it once was again . I left the room with my daughter and requested a refund after telling the employee selling tickets what happened . She gave me one but I had to request a supervisors name and info . No action was taken with John at that time . The rest of my party was denied refunds .

So, WOW! What a great museum this is. One may easily spend 2-3 hours here. Overflow parking exists in the rear of the building. The tour guides are very passionate and knowledgeable about the artist, Ernest “Mooney” Warther. You will watch a few short videos, peruse the collection, and listen to the guide. The gift shop, house, button shed, and gardens are very lovely. The bathrooms are super-clean. Follow the trail, and walk down to the lower lot to see some trains. Weddings take place here. A gazebo is available. A large room is available for special events like bridal showers and birthday parties. This museum is locate a short distance from Interstate 77. All-in-all, this was an enjoyable visit.

What I thought was going to be just a pit stop for the afternoon turned out to be the highlight of my day. I would highly recommend taking the guided tour. The docent was very entertaining and informative, he obviously loves his job. It cost only $15 a person and it was worth every penny. The Gardens were beautiful, the button house was neat, and the house is pretty neat to see as well. The gift shop had a lot of nice things. I only wish we could have gotten in to see the cutlery across the street. The are only open from 9-5 Monday thru Friday.

On our way from northern Ohio to NC, we stopped at the Warther Museum. It was a wonderful choice! This museum is most unique because Ernest “Mooney” Warther was a unique genius.
The whole site was well designed and visitor friendly. We had a wonderful guided tour by Jack who was a wealth of information. Although you could roam around the museum by yourself, the extra insights were appreciated.
The display of Mooney’s artistry was utterly amazing. The man had to have been a savant. He created amazing models of steam trains out of wood and later ivory!
In addition to the museum there is a separate building that houses Frieda Warther’s button collection which is alone fantastic.
If you are ever in the Dover, Ohio area, do not miss this gem of a museum.

We've been there a few times over the past few years. Unbelievable carvings - primarily of trains, but a few other items as well.

The pandemic caused them to change the logistics of the tours, with it being more of a self guided tour, but plenty of signage to give you excellent details as you venture through. Many fantastic trains carved with working parts! And don't miss the Lincoln Funeral train - find the door with the lock and the key hanging nearby. The carving detail on everything is amazing.

If you get a chance and the right folks are there working, have them show you some of the detail they have found as they clean these from time to time. We saw some things today that we hadn't seen in previous. Again, unbelievable work.

Also, if you happen to be in Amish Country over the weekend, you notice that most places are not open on Sunday. But this Warther Museum is open on Sundays, so a great thing to do then.

There is also a David Warther museum on Route 39 with a focus on ships instead of trains. Another great display of carvings, and excellent detail, but we personally enjoy the train one better.
