This temple is located 2km away from the Kanchipuram bus stand.
It is one of the biggest temples in Kanchipuram which covers an area of 40 Acres.
The idol Shiva is called Ekambaranathar and Parvathi is called Elavarkuzhali.
It is one of the five major Shiva temples or Pancha Bootha Sthalams This lingam is called Prithvi lingam (element earth) and this lingam is made of sandstone.
We can contact directly pandit for performing any poojas like Archana or abhishekam.
There is no such dress code and mobile's, cameras are allowed inside the temple but we should not take pictures of Lingam(Prithvi lingam)
This temple is having the tallest gopuram which is built by the Vijayanagar king.
There is a mango tree which is 3500 years old & whose branches are said to yield 4 different types of mangoes from its 4branches. It yields fruits in different flavors like sweet, spicy, citric & bitter. EKAMBARESWARAR means lord of Mango tree.
The temple timings are from 5 am to 1 pm and from 4 pm to 9pm. All temples in Kanchipuram are closed in the afternoon.
Most of the places inside the temple are restricted and Major places which you need to cover are
1. Prithivi lingam, in a conical shape at the top. Denoting the element of (Earth).
2.Sahasra Lingam - 1008 lingams carved in a single lingam.
3. 3500-year-old Mango tree, under which Shiva & Parvati are supposed to have got married.
Parvathi prayed to Shiva under the tree made a lingam out of sand(Prithvi lingam), embraced it, to protect it from the floods of the vegavathi river, and won the heart of Lord Shiva.
4. Thousand pillared halls.( Aram kale Mandapam).
5. Nilaathingal Thundathan(Mahavishnu in the form of Vamana.EKAMBARESWARAR means lord of Mango tree.

Though the Ekambareshwarar temple itself is very old (some proof of its existence have been found as early as 600 CE), the present structure was built during the Chola rule with additions by later rulers. The gopuram of this temple is one of the tallest in India.
The temple at Kanchipuram has a mango tree in the compound that is said to be 3500 years old, meaning it was born during the time of the Rig veda, the earliest written Hindu scripture. The mango tree has four branches, each of which they say yield four different varieties of mango. Hence the name, Ek Aam bareshwar- the Lord of the Mango Tree.
It is one of the Pancha Bhoot sthalas-meaning the Shiva worshipped here represents one of the five elements of nature. Here, the lingam is worshipped as a manifestation of Prithvi.
There is a legend about Parvati’s penance under the mango tree. Shiva tried to break her meditation by sending fire and the mighty Ganga but could not. Parvati thereafter built a lingam out of sand and kept worshipping him. Shiva gave way and finally married her. Since the lingam was built out of sand, Shiva’s manifestation here is that of Prithvi (Earth). This is yet another origin story of the name Ek Aam bareshwar- the Lord of the Mango Tree.

This should be biggest temple in kanchipuram. Carvings are huge and beautiful. It will take atleast an hour to see complete temple. So many big pillars and shivalingas, you will never feel tired watching them. They must have taken years to build this temple for sure. If you are visiting kanchipuram, this is must visit after kanchi kamakshi temple.
