A very impressive working light house that we stayed late enough to watch in action. It makes a fascinating dominant feature for the town.

The ghost?
Last thing I expected mid-day on the lighthouse tour, didn’t even realise the little boy crawling around on the grated floor above in-between the legs of the people in the group above was a ghost, for 5 minutes at least. Just though he was a naughty child pulling faces at me, when he spat on me and grinned I decided I should have a word with his parents. But when the group came down from the light/lantern room above to my floor, there was no boy and no parents??
Was 10 years of so ago now, maybe more.

We were advised to walk up to the lighthouse by the manager at our hotel, only to be disappointed that there was no access and the gates were shut. There was no information posted outside and it would have been nice to have some information for visitors.
It looked an interesting building with plenty of history. A shame.

I love lightnouses and have been known to stay in them so always make a point of visiting if I come across one. Alas this one was closed so I shall to return another day. It is nice to look at though from the outside.

If this is your first time in southwold. please please visit. This is a must do. Big climb to the top. Mind your head if you're 6ft5. ( i'm not ) for a stunning vuew

On our visited to Southwold we visited the outside of the lighthouse and took the opportunity to take some photos.
It is a beautiful lighthouse and stunning at night.
Hopefully next time we visit we can walk inside.

It stands as a focal point, surrounded by cannon, on a lovely, large, clean grassy area, overlooking the sea, very attractive and not far to walk to, from the beach or the shops.

Dogs are banned from the main beach in Southwold from April 1 to September 30, in a signposted area in between the northern end of the beach huts and Gun Hill Cafe. However, dogs are allowed at Denes Beach off Ferry Road, which is just to the north of the main Southwold beach.

You can, but there are usually tickets available on the door - however you may not get the time slot you want.

Have noticed that lighthouse open on Wed 14-16 hours
and Sat & Sun - 11 - 13 & 14 - 16 hours
I am in Southwold from 7th August till 13th. Would like to visit the lighthouse on Wed 12th August - do I have to book tickets - if so where do I buy from, or do we just turn up for the tour? Thank you

Unfortunately Southwold lighthouse is currently closed for essential maintenance and is scheduled to reopen on 21st August 2015.
