First, thanks to all the volunteers who work so hard to make it interesting and a friendly place to visit. Loved the mini trains and the commentary from the drivers and guards. The children 5 and 8 really enjoyed that and the rocket making. To get a real sense of the history do the tractor tour which gives a good overview. Overall it’s a different day, out but in a good way. Worth a trip !

Having lived nearby for many years, decided to pay a visit. Very glad I did, the staff were very welcoming and clearly enjoy sharing their wealth of knowledge with visitors. A very interesting afternoon in the beautiful Essex countryside.

Brilliant place to visit with all the family . Took the train trip and tractor ride around the complex , absolutely fascinating. My adult son has Down syndrome and there were lots of hands on stuff for him to take part in . No cafe unfortunately but we were able to eat our packed lunch under cover . Well worth a visit

This is the most extraordinary place; it is entirely run by volunteers and I have rarely encountered such a mixture of professionalism and enthusiasm such as all the volunteers have. I cannot recommend the place more; it is absolutely fascinating and there is plenty to do - tractor/trailer tours, railway rides and a children's playground and plenty to interest serious enthusiasts.

We went because I found out my great grandmother worked here during WW1 and didn’t expect much. But wow this place is steeped in history we learned so much, the tractor ride is a must because it takes you to parts you can’t see from the main area. The staff are mostly if not all volunteers and so knowledgeable and extremely helpful they are more than happy to talk about the site. We didn’t have any kids with us but we could see lots of hands on things for kids of all ages to do. We spent about 4 hours here.

We went on an organised Buckhurst Hill u3a outing . An excellent experience enhanced by the really knowledgeable and friendly group of volunteers who keep the place running. The tractor trailer tour is really worth including in the visit as it shows the full extent of the site and includes an in depth explanation of the process of gunpowder production. It would seem that the Gunpowder Mills would make for a very entertaining family day-out , as there are a multitude of child friendly activities and if for no other reason it is so easy to access .

Our industrial heritage group comprises a group of retired members who are fascinated to learn about history.
We had a very interesting day - we did not know what to expect but we are fine with that.
The session in the Armoury was scary as some members seemed to be very much at home with a sawn off shotgun!
The museum had lots of information to build on what was in the introductory video. We went back at the lunch break to finish.
The tractor/trailer tour round the site really brought it to life and emphasised the dangers of working with explosives.
Over 4 hours later we left with a lot more knowledge and taking about coming back

What a delight this visit was. We had a tractor tour which I highly recommend as it added to much to our understanding of the site and process of gunpowder. Explanation of the building construction, waterways and operational activity brought the whole story to life. Staff and volunteers were friendly and informative contributing greatly to our visit.
Highly recommend for a group tour such as u3a. Plenty of parking.

Open Easter Sunday ! (first Open Day of 2024)

The site is large but most of that is covered not on foot but using the Land Train. The commentary - by an ex-employee - was fun and packed with information that brought the remains of buildings and old waterways to life.

This was only one of three free rides on offer - a miniature train runs alongside the path from a little station (Wilson's Folly) to the start of the Narrow Gauge Railway where three carriages, pulled a Baguley-Drewry diesel locomotive, give a taster trip on the site railway up to Powdermill Cut and back.

The exhibitions cover three main areas :

Close to the roundabout is a modern display about missiles and rockets (with several real examples) using the new propellants developed on site after production of gunpowder/cordite ceased and it became an Explosives Research Establishment. . Really interesting and easy to understand.

History of the site is split between a long hut near the Narrow Gauge Railway station (housing one of the original barges and special safety equipment) and a very modern Exhibition Hall on The Island which feels purpose-built but was converted from the Establishment Library built in mid-1960s. Forget old display cases and photographs, this is really modern with low lighting pierced by the spotlights for selected exhibits. Sound came on at one point and there were Guess the Right Answer questions with fabric samples for you to feel. I ran out of time for the film upstairs.

The Armoury (off the Exhibition Hall) has displays of the guns using the gunpowder. There is a rack of safe rifles and machine guns that you can pick up feel and one of the volunteers talked us through them (takes only a few minutes). I found this a lot more engaging than just looking at the displays.

The Boiler Hose opposite the Rocket/ Missile Exhibition Hall now houses the cafe and bookshop . Perhaps because of the timing, the cafe was only serving coffee/tea and packets of biscuits (all included in the admission price). The facility looked like it could easily provide full meals if greater numbers of customers could be guaranteed. Event tickets are pre-booked online and the visitors that we saw that day would not have justified a fully functioning cafe.
The bookshop is well worth a browse if you are into the history. Several small guides including a very informative one on the Listed Buildings.

Finally, a big "Thank You" to all the volunteers who made this a really good afternoon . I will be back to see the bits that I missed.
