Interesting walk. Takes about three hours from Harpenden to Hemel Hempstead and you can get a train to each end, but on different lines. Generally well maintained but disappears about a mile away from Hemel Hempstead station and you have to go through the town centre.

This disused lines runs from Hemel Hempstead through to Harpenden and goes right past my house. Being a keen cyclist and marathon runner I found this route to be a favourite of mine for many years and hardly a week would go by without me venturing onto the Nicky line. Some mornings I would even run this from Hemel to Redbourn and back, a good seven miles, before making my way into work. It was ideal ideal for walking my two dogs of an evening and letting them have a little freedom off the lead, but no more. I'm sorry to say that my enjoyment of the Nicky line has been spoilt. Someone, with the power to do so, has decided that the Nicky line needed to be tarmacked at the Hemel Hempstead end. I have no idea as to how far this goes although I know it certainly goes out further than the industrial estate, or even if the work is completed. It never needed to be tarmacked, not for dog walking, running or cycling, the most the tarmac will do is save a little mud in the winter as if a little mud is a problem to someone who loves the outdoors. Living so close I've noticed the increase in the number of motorcyclists and electric scooters who seem to have little to no regard for other users so now the idea of letting dogs or toddlers have the run around is not recommended. If the maintenance of the pathway is anything like the lack of maintenance we usually see then it won't be long before the lovely flat black tarmacked strip becomes a safety risk as it becomes rippled due to tree roots trying to undo the damage caused by man. What was little known about the Nicky line and certainly something I kept quiet about was the occasional glow worms that you could find if you were brave enough to venture along there at night. Glow worms respond to vibration so as I ran or cycled and looked back I could see the green glow of those I had disturbed. Hopefully the glow worms will survive but I wonder how long before we see street lighting which will affect the glow worms. I tried to find out who is responsible for what has been done but so far I have failed. If any part of this has not yet been spoilt then I thoroughly recommend it, do it while you can.

Perfect place to walk the dog with the family. Occasionally crowded and sometimes need to compete for space with joggers and cyclists but much quieter as you leave Harpenden.

I walked The Nickey Line from Harpenden to Welwyn; what a delightful route that has many points of interest.
There are numerous bluebell locations along the old railway line. At a few locations, there are some historical references and education points.
Along my walk, there were dog walkers, runners and cyclists that showed it’s a popular path for many.

The worse bit is the start from the Midland pub on Lower Adeyfield Road up to the HH dump part of Dacorum Council. It's badly kept and a lot of rubbish has been dumped by some of the residents who back on to the railway line. Then for 3/4 to a mile its got Tarmac which is really nice to walk/cycle on. After this its rough going and overgrown in places which is part of Redbourn & Harpenden responsibility as you get towards Harpenden its gets better as they have made a good path again. Why these Councils cannot get together and make this an enjoyable track to use I do not know. It would keep people and cyclists away from the built up areas and main roads.
Tarmac the whole railway line so it can be easily used by all, only if the Council's were serious about getting people to use it.

I picked up the Nickey line walk at Redbourn where it is next to the Millenium Picnic Area in the village.
The path is well maintained although I happened to visit after alot of rain and there were puddles and muddy patches to be avoided.
The Nickey Line used to run from Harpenden to Hemel Hempstead and has now been beautifully transformed as a great place to walk, run or cycle.
I headed for Harpenden and walked all the way to where the line used to join the Midland mainline. There are quite a few places to sit along the way and even though I was walking through a town it was very tranquil.
Highly recommended.

It was getting late when I was walking along here so light wasn’t great and I was glad I wasn’t alone.
The line itself was nice, rubbish free and in good condition. It would be nice to see more families along there.

The second time I have walked a part of this old disused rail walk and on this occasion I began at the opposite end ( Hemel Hempstead)and walked to the village of Redbourn where I was picked up.
This part was equally interesting and on this occasion I barely encountered a sole.
There was an occasional dog walker and a cyclist as before so I believe that this shared cycle/walking route is still not too well known about.
As I have mentioned previously there are plenty of joining points throughout this 7 miles walk.
It is not the most scenic I have done but thoroughly enjoyable and fascinating to know that once upon a time this was a train line.
Pity they closed these lines, but at least they are making excellent use of them.

At the beginning of the lock down I decided to explore the Nicky Line. I have lived in Hemel for 40 +years and never got round to it. I started my many visits in the unfurling spring, I managed the whole line twice.. it’s a long way and you have to remember you have to walk back lol. If 14 miles is a bit excessive just do bits of it. I have met lovely people and seen the seasons change. Kept me sane whilst locked up and bored. Recommend for everyone. Read up on the history before you go, makes it even more interesting xxj
