Very little to see and most of it was WOKE gone crazy. Not worth the parking charge. Luckily there is no charge to go in, otherwise would have asked for our money back !!

Terrible disabled access. For some reason the parking for disabled drivers is marked out in thin blue lines that are hard to see. I didn't see any access ramp so had to climb steep stairs to the entrance. The sign for the ramp access was tiny and had been obscured by a group of people.
Signage in the gallery was poor, so it was difficult to navigate the featured artist's work. There seemed to be acres of wasted space, very poor items in the shop.
A very poorly designed gallery and not welcoming / helpful to disabled people new to the place.

This could be such a great venue. It’s a beautiful, airy building with great sea view.
Sadly, all you’ll find inside is hackneyed and extreme leftwing activism. The usual contentious topics: collective racial guilt, critical race theory, open borders etc etc - straight out of the student union bar.
You’ll be treated to a blackboard covered in “Black Lives Matter” lines. Because you’re a nasty little racist and you need to be schooled by the moral superiors that run this exhibition.
Have donations been channeled to the Black Lives Matter Organisation to spend on their founder’s new $6M 6,500 sq ft mansion I wonder?
The “art” here is bleak, divisive stuff.
It’s awash with pretentious virtue signalling and devoid of any artistic merit or charm. There’s nothing allegorical or metaphorical about the work here. You’re confronted with raw political angst; the kind that gets graffitied onto railway sidings in deprived areas of South London.
If you like to self-flagellate at the altar of woke, the Turner Contemporary is the place for you.
For the rest of us, let’s hope the space can be used for something more positive and creative in future.

We had a great time. It certainly was contemporary and we might have been way out of our comfort zone if it weren't for Lucy, one of the staff who led us through the installation. She was great

A terrible disappointment. I had hoped to be challenged by some interesting modern art. Instead the main exhibition is some ultra woke stuff promoting BLM and the like. Simply dire. And to think that someone (us, the taxpayer?) has paid for this. The only redeeming feature is a room with some JMW Turner work, mainly sketches, but including a magnificent painting of the Dover picket boat arriving in Calais. The contrast between art and what purports to be it could not have been starker.

Disappointing. Not much art but a lot of woke. On the plus side it is free (though we no doubt pay for it through our taxes) and there are a few Turners so perhaps worth going in when it is raining.

Nice gallery , with some great Turner pictures . Other exhibition interesting as well .
The gallery itself , is very clean and the staff are friendly , helpful and knowledgeable. It is not a big gallery so an hour or so will be enough to see everything . The cafe was closed on our visit which was a shame . Check opening times before you go as sometimes they don't open on Mondays or Tuesdays

Spent a lovely hour or so at the gallery. Great + thought provoking exhibition from Larry Achiampong. His curation of the JMW Turner exhibition was really engaging and interesting. Thank you! ✨

The Turner Contemporary is an art gallery on the seafront in Margate. It opened in 2011 as an initiative to help regenerate the town which was in a state of serious decline as a seaside holiday resort. Whether or not that catalyst has been successful is debatable. The title of the gallery commemorates the association of the town with noted landscape painter JMW Turner, who went to school in the town and visited often. It’s intended as a local art space which features a rolling programme of temporary exhibitions featuring local artists
You can’t miss it’s curious box-like shape on the harbour pier beside the white church-like Tourist Information Centre. It’s steel and glass angles seem to want to soar skywards, but just can’t make it. In many respects it’s a bit alien to the gentle Victorian townscape and seascape which surrounds it; I can imagine that on a bleak day it looks equally as bleak.
The gallery is free to visit. I must say how gobsmacked I was to learn, on arrival, that the gallery which is named after one of the country’s most formidable landscape painters does not hold one single item of JMW Turner’s work. And to be really honest, the most interesting item (and probably the gallery’s only permanent item) is what you see seaward out of the gallery’s windows: Antony Gormley’s human-like solid cast iron figure which sits on Fulsam Rock in the sea, and which best be seen at low tide. It’s a part of his ‘Another Time’ series, where 100 similar figures are installed all over the world. You certainly don’t need to go to the gallery to see that figure. Just walk down the stairs to the beach behind the gallery and you’ll be able to get a lot closer to it (though you are not permitted to walk right out to it). We saw it at low tide; by the time we visited the gallery the figure was almost submerged by the tide.
Downstairs is a cafe and gift shop; the gallery spaces are upstairs. We saw two exhibitions: The first was :’I Just Can’t Think Straight Straight’, It had some thought-provoking exhibits, alongside some whacky and. Totally incomprehensible stuff. Similarly, in another galley space there was exhibition of works by local artists. I can’t remember what it was called; I certainly remember some unusual (bizarre) exhibits that really stretch your mind regarding your own definition of ‘modern art’. It was supposed to be in two rooms but a problem with the door between the two gallery spaces meant one room had to be closed off.
The gallery is certainly worth visiting. The exhibitions change on a rolling programme, so check with the gallery’s website to see current showings, and current opening and closing times. The gallery also closes for short periods between exhibitions, so if you are specifically visiting Margate to visit the Turner Contemporary, at least check that it is open. It’s a bright airy space and pleasant for a browse; you just don’t have to like everything you see.
Its not a difficult walk if you are arriving into Margate by train. You can't miss it's box-like structure beyond the curve of Margate Main Sands. It sticks out, though it isn't an eyesore.

Hi Brian!
The railway doesn't have a storage space, however at Turner we do have lockers where you can keep your things while walking around the gallery. Hope this helps :)

Am I right in thinking that you are closed on Saturdays? Seems a bit strange as this is the day that most people, ourselves included, have the time to come down & visit.

Is there somewhere we can check in suitcases and bags at the gallery (hand luggage size) we will be arriving to margate in the morning and will not be able to check in to our apartment till later.
Thanks
For future reference for anyone in 2019 wanting to know: I visited yesterday and had a cabin sized suitcase with me. I didn't think my suitcase would fit but it did with room left for a few carrier bags I had also. I paid £1 at the cash desk for a token (you get to keep this so if you return again, you don't need to pay for a locker again)
We were also allowed to leave our bags in the lockers whilst we went off and did other things at Margate which was so great as it was really hot and the idea of lugging around a suitcase was not what I had in mind for a weekend by the sea!
