Interesting to think this was the bridgehead for the Roman invasion of Britain, 2000 years ago. Can’t imagine the bustle of activity that would have surrounded this area back then.
Worth a look if your in the area … you can walk to it from Sandwich along the Saxon Way.

Was lucky to get a place on the ampitheatre tour today. (11am and 2pm for only another couple of weeks.)
AMAZING!
There are exciting plans to improve the on-site museum and to create a facsimile Roman gate. Should be ready next year. Can't wait!

Definitely worth a visit, with well preserved walls and fortifications. However, the information boards around the site were very short on content, and it was difficult to actually get a timeline of developments on the site. The not dissimilar Burgh Castle in Suffolk does it much better.
We spent a pleasant hour wandering round, but had to rely on our own knowledge of Roman history in Britain to work things out. A tad expensive for so little help from English Heritage.

Very limited displayed information unless you buy a book or download an app. Thankfully a very knowledgeable volunteer Dave, gave us so much information and made our trip so much more interesting.

Due for an upgrade later this year to the museum and information centre. A bigger site than I expected, with much higher thicker walls, still standing in plces

I have taken school parties here before and wanted to revisit with family.
I was not disappointed. It remains impressive. It also requires detective work and imagination. The sea has gone, few walls remain and it is a matter of 'here stood'. The brief small museum helps.
So don your deerstalker and explore 2000 years of our history

Had an incredible day at Richborough. The guide Alex said he didn’t understand why it is not massive on the tourist trail- and I agree. Such an important part of our history. The Romans came there in 43AD. After a few skirmishes with Boudicca, they then built an incredible quadraphon - a beautiful 4 way marble gate. Richborough was a hugely important settlement. It was by the sea as Thanet was an island. The excavation shows it’s decline too. They built a defensive wall and had to put it up pretty quick in the 4th century. Alex was a fantastic guide very knowledgeable and a great communicator. Cannot recommend this place more highly.

I gave it 5 marks because it is a remarkable set of Roman ruins, with such a history of the arrival place of the Romans, though so much has been lost to us of what was here.
There is a large car park and then a short narrow track leading to the office where you buy your tickets if you don't already have them. There is also a very small shop and museum.
Walking around the site you get the best sense of what you are looking at by reading each of the information plaques. This was obviously a very important site of entry for the Romans, if you are interested in history I think this is likely to be a 'must see'.

Massive fort- great place for kids. There is a small museum which gives you an idea of what it looked like in the past. Fascinating

Were some people expecting the Roman army marching past

Agree entirely and you do get the modern version of the 'Roman Army' camping there occasionally. (Ermine Street Guard etc.) Their displays are excellent.
