Situated in an elevated position in Alford town centre is St. Wilfrid, where a church has stood since the 11th century. The mix of all the architectural traditions is a testimony to the great age of the church. The building has Romanesque, Anglo-Norman, Gothic and Jacobean elements. Some original features include a fine Jacobean pulpit, 15th and 16th Century stained glass and a 17th Century tomb of one Sir Robert Christopher, and an ornately carved wood roof screen with delicate traceries.
The tomb of the Knight must've belonged to a wealthy individual given the elaborate and delicate carving of the deceased and his wife atop the tomb.

Wonderful to visit and very well kept. The church is the key feature in this town and we enjoyed looking around the grounds

I enjoyed a long look around this lovely church with a walking hand guide providing all the relevant information. I particularly liked the stained glass window showing St Michael, St George and Sir Galahad and the smaller one showing St Wilfrid. A splash of colour is provided by the excellent wall hangings, embroidered panels and 215 kneelers made by members of the congregation to represent local organisations, or to commemorate people who have died. A corner of the grounds has been planted with various wildflowers which were putting on a lovely display.

Thank you for your wonderful comments but may l point out that the 3 child inspired banners were designedby the pupils not made by the schools.

Small , well kept church worth a visit. The hand held information boards were excellent and I think other churches/ stately homes could adopt this idea. Very interesting and well described.

The church was consecrated in 1350 and restored in 1867 by Sir Gilbert Scott. Fragments of 14th-century glass can be seen in the north chancel window also in the window of the north aisle.
In the 16th century Alfords 1st Grammer School used to be in a small room above the porch of the church.
The church is very well kept and well used. There are lots of beautiful needlework examples in the church. This church is well worth a visit. They are collecting any old metal to raise money to build their own car park. The work on the car park should start later this year. Wonderful church.

We stopped off in Alford and walked up to the church to have a look at the building. The church had open signs and welcomed visitors. The church is set above the road almost in the centre of Alford in its own grounds. There is an information guide, on a paddle, you can use as you walk around inside that points out points of interest. Definitely worth visiting.

How far back does the cemetery go? And does the church carry records from the 13th cent-17th cent? My family came from great coates in 1632 and goes back to at least 1490 there.
