Wow, what a pleasant surprise! We were staying in Hawes and went on a walk which took us through Gayle. We were fortunate that it was Thursday and as we passed Gayle Mill realised it was open for tours, so we 'popped in', expecting it to be an interesting half hour stop. How wrong we were! We were treated to an outstanding tour of the mill and its history by an engaging and well informed guide. We saw the machines working and heard the history of the building along with stories of people and characters from the past. The tour lasted 90 minutes and we were invited to stay on to have a cup of tea and further chat. A truly brilliant afternoon, interesting, educational and entertaining. Do go and support these amazing volunteers if you are in the area on Thursdays, they are passionate and welcoming and the stories they tell will interest everyone, not just engineers or industrial historians.

Wow - this place is unique. Great tour by Sarah, full of information about the mill's history, and even a demonstration of some of the tools (which are run by the water turbine).
We've visited lots of mills before, but they tend to be flour mills as opposed to this one (which was originally a cotton mill, then it eventually became a sawmill). Volunteers keep it going, and they are all so passionate and knowledgeable about the mill. I would love to visit again one day, to see if they've managed to use the water energy to generate electricity to send back to the national grid.

Fabulous! The mill is currently only open on Thursdays for tours on the hour, but so worth a visit! The volunteer guide who showed us round was full of so much knowledge and information and we could have listened to her all afternoon. Our tour was easily 1.5hrs long and would have been longer but we had to scoot off for our lunch booking at the creamery. We loved seeing the water power in action and the demo of the different machinery. There is so much history tied up in this building and the enthusiasm of the volunteers running it is wonderful to see. Would highly recommend a visit!

What a hidden gem. Had a great afternoon with a very informative and thorough tour of the mill. A must if you are in the area. Currently open for hourly tours on a Thursday.

Family was my elderly parents, tripadvisor doesn't give this option. Entry was £5 per person. The mill is small, but the lady who was our guide was very knowledgeable. We did not expect the tour to last as long as it did. The mill is over 3 levels. The guide explained every piece of machinery on each floor. It was extremely interesting, and my father enjoyed the tour. He was an engineer. The tour was mote than worth the fee.

Staying in Hawes for a few nights, the mill came up online as a "thing to do". Situated 5 minutes walk from Wensleydale Creamery
Only open one day a week at present (Thursday), luckily that worked for us.
The setting is beautiful and the history of the building is really interesting. Our guide was very knowledgeable and generous with her time. We had fun and learned a lot. Would definitely recommend a visit to anyone interested in our industrial past. The volunteers in charge are doing an amazing job.

We only found out about Gayle Mill on the last night of our stay in Hawes, so we ‘popped in’ for a look before packing up to leave and were there for over an hour! The guide was very well informed about the mill’s fascinating history as a cotton mill and then wood working shop. It would be great to see a woodworking demonstration. Hopefully they can get the hydro electric power up and running soon to feed back into the grid ⚡️!

Very knowledgeable and enthusiastic tour guide, learned lots of local history. Fascinating talk and tour- will be amazing if they can get more volunteers and get the mill working for public to experience.
Highly recommended- open for guided tours Thurs, Fri and Sat between 10am and 4pm.

Well we would have liked to review Gayle Mill but we were not even allowed in. Apparently, we were told that it was only open for guided tours ( not stated anywhere outside) and the guide was rather abrupt with us - didn't offer a tour and gave us zero information on how to arrange one. I'm also a tour guide at a museum ( a decent one ) and I'd be embarrassed to treat visitors this way. Well you lost the £10 admission fees and if you're happy to turn money away then crack on!

We had a delightful tour of this historical old building. Sarah, our friendly guide, was very knowledgeable and interesting. We’ve always wanted to see the inside of this building and it didn’t disappoint with all its machinery and tools of days gone by. This day and age is good to see something kept for its historical worth rather than given over to developers.
It’s well worth a visit.
